Need help migrating Quickbooks Point of Sale 18

I have an IT background and attempting to migrate something that has been setup a long time ago by the accountant.

At a company I am supporting, the Quickbooks company file sits on one of the companies servers.  Quickbooks runs as multi user mode to the 2 office ladies.  The shop computer has Quickbooks Point of Sale and it needs to be migrated to a new Windows 10 computer.

The Task:  Migrate all configs and settings of QB POS from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

POS is installed on Windows 10 but I am confused on the remaining parts because it isn't apparent in the system how to configure it.

ISSUE:

One of the issues I am seeing is it is reliant on one of the office ladies computer.  Her computer has to be on for Point of Sale to function.  Her computer isn't sharing any files so I am confused on that setup.  I don't see it in the settings.  Another goofy setting on the OLD POS system is it points to a company file on an old server that doesn't exist.  The server is unplugged.  Everything seems to work for these guys if the office ladies computer is running.

QUESTION:

How do I migrate this to the Windows 10 computer?  On old computer I don't see any options to backup.  It all appears to be grayed out.  On the new Windows 10 computer POS is installed.  I can't see a way to connect it to any files on the office ladies computer because she just isn't sharing anything from her computer.  The only option I see is to restore a company file in which I could point to the server but I am not certain.  Any ideas to help or perhaps some insight on how this setup could currently be operating?

Re: Need help migrating Quickbooks Point of Sale 18

Good day, Tony_STL.

I'd be happy to lend a hand in migrating QuickBooks Point of Sale from Windows 7 to Windows 8.

To better isolate this issue, as an initial step you can use the POS Connectivity Tool to help you identify the connectivity issues.

Restart Point of Sale:

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key + R to open the Run command.
  2. In the search field, type services.msc then press enter.
  3. From the list of services, find QBPOS Database Manager vXX (latest version available ).
  4. Right-click the service and click STOPNote: If the service status is STOP, click START or simply RESTART the service.

Create a copy of the company file:

Important: Ensure to have a copy of your data before running the tool. This is different from making a backup copy of your company file.

  1. Click the Windows button from the desktop and open the Computer window
  2. In the left window, navigate to the location: C:\Users\Public\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks Point of Sale vXX (latest version)
  3. Right-click the Data folder and choose Copy.
  4. Right-click any blank space on your desktop and choose Paste.

Download the Connectivity Tool:

  1. Download the QBPOS Troubleshoot Connection tool:
  2. Save the file to the following location:
    • For 64-bit:C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks POS XX
    • For 32-bit:C:\Program File \Intuit\QuickBooks POS XX
  3. After the download completes, click Run.
  4. The tool displays information about your computer and how it affects Point of Sale's ability to open:
  • QBPOS Install TypeIf this is your primary installation, this should display Server Workstation. If it displays Client WorkstationReinstall Point of Sale again as a server workstation.

Note: Version 12.0 will show a message in red that says it cannot find the installation folder so it will not display the installation type as expected.

  • QBPOS DB Service StatusThis should display Running. If not, close all programs, reboot your computer, and run the tool again.

Note: To return to the folder easily, right-click the Point of Sale icon and choose Open File Location.

Re: Need help migrating Quickbooks Point of Sale 18

Hello Rose thank you for replying. I have performed the steps you mentioned on the Windows 7 computer that I am attempting to migrate to Windows 10.

Issue 1: "QBPOS Database Manager VXX" service does not exist
Only services QB related are:
- QBCFMonitorService - Started
- QBIDPService - Started
- QuickbooksDB24 - Disabled

Issue 2: There are no files in "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale 18.0"
The company file appears to be on a different computer.

Downloaded connectivity tool
Copied to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks POS 18.0"

Ran Connection Test
QBPOS Install Type: Client Workstation
TCP/IP Protocol: Enabled
Windows Firewall Status: Needed QBPOS Application exceptions defined in Windows Firewall. (Note Windows Firewall Disabled)
3-rd Party Firewall Status: Not Detected

Your next steps indicate that I should reinstall Quickbooks Point of sale as Server. I have yet to complete this step because this is a computer that I am trying to decomission. I would like to copy the settings over to a new Windows 10 computer.

I will attempt to contact support this week. Can you confirm if contacting support would require a support contract? The company does pay for Quickbooks Support however I do not know if that covers the Point of Sale system.
