QB installer only allows 11 digits for license

I am trying to install QB Premier 2019 on a new-to-me HP laptop. I get the installer running, accept the terms, and on the window where I am supposed to put in the 15-digit license code and 6-digit product code, the interface only allows 11 digits and 4 digits respectively (3-3-3-2 for each license field, and 2-2 for the product - instead of 4-4-4-3 and 3-3). I spent 2 hours this morning chatting with a QB techie and tried multiple troubleshooting options, to no avail.

I am beyond frustrated that such a simple task - enter a numeric code - is causing me headaches.

Re: QB installer only allows 11 digits for license

Another chat with a QB tech support person gave me this solution: copy and paste the license number and product number into the fields. I needed to paste all 15 digits in one paste action, rather than pasting 4 digits at a time. But it worked.

Still very annoyed that this was a problem in the first place. Why can't it just be a simple number field that would work with even quirky computers? I lost hours because of this.

I hope this solution can be of help to others.

Re: QB installer only allows 11 digits for license

Hello jho,

Thank you for contacting our QuickBooks Desktop Customer Care and for sharing the steps you've tried.

I can add another troubleshooting to help you install the software successfully. Let's try deleting the entitlement file so you can re-enter the license and product information.

First, let's close the program and ensure that all QuickBooks processes are no longer running.

  1. From the keyboard, press Ctrl+Shit+Esc. This opens the Task Manager.
  2. Select the Process tab.
  3. Sort the processes alphabetically by selecting the Process Name header.
  4. Search for all instances of QBW32.EXE and select End Task.

Once done, open the entitlement data folder for your operating system and version of QuickBooks, here's how:

  1. On your keyboard, process Windows+R to open the Run window.
  2. Enter C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Entitlement Client\v8 (or v6) and press Enter. (The folder location is the same for all QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise versions.)
  3. Right-click the EntitlementDataStore.ecml file and select Delete.
  4. Select Yes to confirm you want to delete the file.
  5. Open your company file and follow the instructions to register the application.

Take a look at this article for the detailed steps: Resolve installation errors by deleting damaged file.

That should get you on the right track. Please let me know how that works for you. I'm here provide you additional assistance if you need anything else. Have a good one.

Re: QB installer only allows 11 digits for license

this is a really dumb question, but, are you installing a US version of desktop

I assume you tried just entering the numbers, no dashes, no tab, no spaces

Re: QB installer only allows 11 digits for license

I got the same problem but the instructions did not solve the issue.

-Note I did not find any QBW32.EXE file from Process.

-I found and deleted file: EntitlementDataStore.ecml EntitlementDataStore.ecml

Is it because I am using Windows 7 professional?

Please help. Thanks.

Re: QB installer only allows 11 digits for license

Welcome to the Community, Lee6,

Thanks for trying the recommended troubleshooting. Let's make sure to register your QuickBooks Desktop.

To install the software, we need to use the license number and product code. May I know where did you purchase QuickBooks?

As for your first question, you can try checking the Description of the Task Manager window. Select the QuickBooks description and click End Process.

After deleting the EntitlementDataStore.ecml EntitlementDataStore.ecml file, please open your company file and follow the instructions to install QuickBooks Desktop.

Pressing the Num Lock key can also do the trick.

That should get you back on track.

Please let me know how it goes after following these steps. I want to make sure you’re all set with this concern. Have a good one.

Re: QB installer only allows 11 digits for license

hi @jho & @Lee6

We are interested to read this case. Are you sure you have purchased QuickBooks 2019 US version? We help our clients in Indonesia and Asia to provide the license. We never met yet any license of QuickBooks 2019 with 11 digits of installation code and 4 digits of product code. I don't know how many digits for UK or Canadian version has.

Re: QB installer only allows 11 digits for license

I bought the QB canadian version online, from Staples. It requires 15 digits licence key, and 6 digits product key. I downloaded the QB canadian application from Intuit website 2 months ago, and had no issue to install then.

However, I recently changed my desktop, and needed to download and reinstall again - and that is when the problem starts.

Re: QB installer only allows 11 digits for license

Good day, Lee6.

Let me provide you additional information regarding reinstalling QuickBooks Desktop.

Before reinstalling and using QuickBooks Desktop, it is important to know the necessary system requirements. This will ensure that QuickBooks is compatible with your setup and will help avoid problems when you start using the program.

To know your QuickBooks Data information, press F2 key on your keyboard. This will open up a hidden window. This window is a wealth of information. You will find the product number, license number and other data file information here.

You can download your QuickBooks directly from the website as long as you have the license and product number.

Here's how:

  1. Go to https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products.
  2. Select your Country.
  3. Choose the QuickBooks version.
  4. Hit Search.

After downloading, try to install your QuickBooks Desktop again by following the steps below:

  1. Select the QuickBooks executable file for installation.
  2. Select Yes to All. Select Next.
  3. Agree to the Software License Agreement, then select Next.
  4. Enter your License and Product numbers, then select Next.
  5. Select the type of installation for the computer.
    • Option 1: Express: this allows the installer to make the recommended choices for you. If you choose this option, skip to Step 9.
    • Option 2: Custom and Network Options: choose this if you'll be using multiple versions of QuickBooks Desktop on the computer or if you'll use QuickBooks to share data with other users on a network.
  6. Select where you will be using QuickBooks.
    • Option 1: I'll be using QuickBooks on this computer.
    • Option 2: I'll be using QuickBooks on this computer, and I'll be storing our company file here so it can be shared over our network.
    • Option 3: I won't be using QuickBooks on this computer. I will be storing our company file on this computer so it can be shared over a network.
  7. Choose a new install location or select Next to install to the default directory.
  8. Select Install.
  9. Select Open QuickBooks to get started.
  10. Activate QuickBooks and you're all set.

These recommended articles are a good reference:

Let me know how it goes by leaving a reply below. I want to make sure you'll be able to reinstall your QuickBooks successfully.

Re: QB installer only allows 11 digits for license

Hello there, jho.

I appreciate you for getting back and keeping us updated.

I'm glad you're able to successfully downloaded your QuickBooks Desktop. My colleague RoseMarjorie provided a very detailed steps on the process of installing QuickBooks and you can always go back and refer to the articles shared above.

On the other note, you are correct about the 15 digit license number and the 6 digit product number. I appreciate you for pointing this out. My colleague Precious updated some information above to avoid confusions.

If you've done all the recommended steps above but is still only allowed to enter 11 digits and 4 digits for the license and product number, try pressing the Num Lock key on your keyboard. Doing this will help you enter the correct number of digits for License Number (15 digit) and Product Number (6 digits).

Just in case you need assistance from a live support, feel free to reach us through the contact details found in this link: Contact the QuickBooks Desktop Customer Support Team.

If there's anything I can help you with or further questions about installing QuickBooks, just let me know. I'd be glad to help you some more.

Re: QB installer only allows 11 digits for license

Incredible! Your simple suggestion of pressing the Num Lock key on your keyboard worked. I entered the licence code from the keyboard, instead of the Number pad of the keyboard, and it worked!

PS: Not sure if this was partly the cause of the issue, but I am accessing my desktop through Teamviewer.

Re: QB installer only allows 11 digits for license

Sorry to have disappeared for a while - other priorities took over my life. None of the above suggestions have worked for me.

The Number Lock solution was the first I discovered on another site, but it did not work for me. I have the same problem if I use the standard number keys OR the number keypad. I even plugged in a USB keyboard in case there was an issue with that.

Regarding the Entitlement File - QB have never been installed on this machine, so there is not even an Intuit folder to delete, let alone an entitlement file.

I'll say that I'd be glad to explore more deeply the keyboard/num-lock solution, because I wonder if it may reside in the keyboard driver or something software-related. I'm not sure how to further test this, though. For reference, this machine is an HP Envy 360 m6 convertible. Device Manager tells me that the latest keyboard drivers are installed.
