QBKS 2019 for Mac crashing - Cannot open Data Files

I have been using QBKS 2019 for my Macbook Pro perfectly for 9 months. All of a sudden I cannot open any data files, the app continues to crash, even when I try with the sample files. QBKS opens to the last open file, in my case a sample company, but nothing else is possible.

Attached is the error report. It's 37 pages long, but maybe just the first few lines will already means something to someone! I use QBKS version 18.0.5.3312R6 and Mac OS Mojave 10.14.5.

Any idea what I can do? Thank you so much in advance.

Thanks for getting back to us, lokita.

Allow me to take over and help you open your QuickBooks for Mac data files. Let's get this working for you.

You may want to try removing the preferences file in your QuickBooks for Mac.

Here's how:

1. Quit QuickBooks if it is running.

2. In the Finder, hold the option key down and choose Go->Library menu.

3. The library window opens. Double click on the Preferences folder.

4. Drag the com.intuit.quickbooks20xx.plist file to the trash (where xx is the year of the QuickBooks version).

5. Relaunch QuickBooks.

If you're still getting the same issue, I'd suggest getting in touch with our QuickBooks for Mac Support. They have the necessary tools to get you back up and running.

  1. Go to: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact.
  2. Choose your QuickBooks Product.
  3. Select your QuickBooks version.
  4. On the Contact Us page, click a topic.
  5. Click on the Get Phone Number button to see the support number.

Re: QBKS 2019 for Mac crashing - Cannot open Data Files

We can perform some troubleshooting steps to open your data file, lokita.

It's possible there's a damaged component on your software causing it to crash when opening a file. You can try uninstalling and reinstalling QuickBooks for Mac to fix this.

Here's how to uninstall QuickBooks for Mac:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. From the Finder menu (search bar) on the upper right corner of your screen, choose Go > Applications.
  3. Click the QuickBooks icon and drag/move it to the Trash.

Then, follow the steps below to reinstall QuickBooks for Mac:

  1. Go to QuickBooks Product Updates.
  2. Click [Change] to select your QuickBooks Desktop version.
  3. Click the Download button to download the installer file to your computer.
  4. Double-click the downloaded .dmg file.
  5. Drag the QuickBooks Desktop icon to the Applications folder to install.

If the same thing happens, you can follow Solution 4 to Solution 5 in this article: Troubleshoot Crash Catcher.

If the problem persists, I'd suggest contacting our Technical Support Team. They'll investigate what's causing this issue and help you access your company file.

Here's how:

  1. Click Help on the top menu.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Enter your concern in the Have a Question? field.
  4. Click Contact us.
  5. Click QuickBooks Setup & Navigation.
  6. Choose Installing QuickBooks.
  7. Click Start a Message.

Re: QBKS 2019 for Mac crashing - Cannot open Data Files

Thank you, I tried everything including steps 4 and 5 you mention. It still does not work. The exact same problem happens with the New User I set up. I could open my one data files once, and then tried the other one, and the app crashed.

So, where exactly would I find the Help menu you mention? In my QBKS version I see Help, then I see QBKS Help (but not QBKS Desktop Help you mention) and I do not see any Have a Question? field. See attached screenshots, please.

Re: QBKS 2019 for Mac crashing - Cannot open Data Files

enabledCrashed Thread: 4 Dispatch queue: com.apple.FileCoordination.3 File Coordination is macOS in the background trying to sync several different processes that are writing to the same file. its used by iCloud but also will happen for DropBox, Google Drive, etc. In the case of a QuickBooks company file of course one of the processes is QuickBooks. Do you have any extensions installed that might be interacting with files? DropBox comes to mind, although I use DropBox myself without issue. You can reboot with the shift key held down as the macOS comes back up and that will disable third party extensions. Try that and see if the problem disappears. If it does let us know here and we'll help diagnose. Otherwise, where is the company file stored? Is there anything about that directory that is different than the standard macOS Documents directory? Is it shared on DropBox, GoogleDrive, on a remote volume, accessed over a network, etc? Do you have any antivirus software installed?

Re: QBKS 2019 for Mac crashing - Cannot open Data Files

Ok, I just discovered this: I close an open company file via File / Close Company Log off. Then I can open my data file. But in order to open another one I have to repeat File / Close Company Log Off instead of simply going to File / Open Recent. What I also discovered is that once I managed to open one of my data files this way, I can open the other one via File / Open Recent. It appears that the problem has fixed itself! How strange.

Re: QBKS 2019 for Mac crashing - Cannot open Data Files

That is strange. I've asked QA to investigate the flow you are using. Can you tell me if your company files are being shared to the cloud in some way (iCloud, DropBox, Google Drive, Box, etc)? That may help us reproduce the issue. If we can reproduce it we can fix it.

Thank you for your comments. These files are single user, not shared, and not on iCloud or similar storage. Simply on my hard drive on the stand-alone MacBook Pro.
