Hi,
I have been using Quickbooks Pro 2014 for a long time. I am thinking about upgrading to Quickbooks Online. I am currently using QB 2014 to manage two separate companies. Will I be able to do this with a single Quickbooks Online subscription? Or will I need two subscriptions?
Thanks and best regards,
Paul
One QBO account is for one company file

Yes, you can manage two separate companies in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @PaulKraemer. Let me share further details on how this works.
QBO lets you administer two companies given that they'll have two separate subscriptions. This means each company will have its online profile. With this, you need to sign up for a new additional account for your second business.
To sign up, here's how:
You can learn more about adding multiple companies to your QBO account, I'd recommend checking out this article: Create or add another company. It also includes instructions on how to switch between your companies and managing them accordingly.
Additionally, here are two helpful articles that'll guide you in importing your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) company file to QBO:
What to expect when you switch from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online. It'll guide you on the import limitation when converting QBDT data to QBO.
Please let me know if you have other concerns. I'm just around to help. Take care always.

Will I be able to do this with a single Quickbooks Online subscription?
NO.
Or will I need two subscriptions?
YES
Following this example: two separate companies under one subscription....
what happens with the payments of the subscriptions? Can I pay both subscriptions with a separate card or direct debit?
Ideally I would like each of the companies to cover the cost of each of the subscriptions.
thanks
One QBO account only has 1 Master Admin. You have to login as Master Admin to access the Billing and Subscription menu. As I mentioned earlier, one QBO account is for one company file. You may manage branches/divisions by utilizing the Class/Location feature available in QBO Plus and Advanced. Otherwise you should open a new account.

As another option, consider QB Desktop to manage multi company files. You may purchase a one time license of QBD 2021 Pro for 1 user worth $399 or Premier for 1 user worth $499 thru a a partner. Deploy a private cloud if required to access data by internet.
