I have a two step process to do for a client. They are taking over as manager for a condo association. The prior manager used QB Desktop pro 2019. My client does not have QB. So here's my first question. Can my client purchase QB Pro 2019 Desktop, then import the data from the previous manager, and use the desktop version until end of year? Then, beginning new year, they want to purchase QBO and convert from desktop to online. Is this easily done? My final question - I want to download a free version of QB desktop and import data from the previous manager just to test the process out so that I will know how to install the desktop and import data for my client. Is there any problem in doing so? Thank you.
Hi there, @Scando,
Converting your file may take a lot of time, but I'll be with you all throughout the process.
Regarding your first question, the client can either purchase their own QuickBooks software, or use the previous manager's license and product number to install the file.
Once installed, they can ask for the most recent backup copy of the company file then restore it to the new location. I'm including these resources to help you with the installation process:
When they are ready to switch to QuickBooks Online, have them follow the instructions found in this link: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.
You may also see this conversion guide for your visual preference: File Conversion.
If you’d like to try QuickBooks Desktop to run test for your business, you can download our trial links. Please make sure the computer meets the system requirements to avoid any installation issues. You can check this article to find the version you need: QuickBooks Desktop Trial Links
Here's a tutorial that will visually guide you through the installation process: Install QuickBooks Desktop.
Let me know if you have additional questions, @Scando. I'm always here to help. Have a nice week ahead!
Thank you very much for your help with this. My first move will be to download the trial version on my computer along with asking the current manager to provide a backup of the data. I will then import to be sure everything goes smoothly. Once I'm comfortable that it worked ok, I will ask the current manager if they will share their credentials with the new manager. I have a feeling that they will not, in which case I will have the new manager purchase the software. Then at the right time, backup from old manager and import to new manager.
Thank you for the links you have provided, I will definitely be using them. I would like to keep this discussion open for a while if that's ok. I was surprised to see your response as I didn't receive an email advising of your message. That always worked fine previously, but not this time.
Anyway -- thank you for your help and I will reach out if additional questions arise.
Best regards, Steve
I apologize for not responding earlier. I didn't realize you had replied as i didn't receive an email advising of our response. Anyway, thank you for the great advice and links that you provided. I'm going to take you up on your advice. Since the email didn't work, I would appreciate your keeping this discussion open. It may take me a few days to do the steps. If you can't keep this open, would you please advise on the easiest way to access our conversation later on?
Again - thanks and best regards, Steve
