Quickbooks Premier Desktop Nonprofit -> Quickbooks Online Plus

I am treasurer for a non-profit, using QuickBooks: Premier Nonprofit Edition 2019 (windows desktop).  We have about 12 years of donations, donors, etc. in our database, and I have about 4 years experience using the non-profit desktop version of Quickbooks.  To improve data security, we purchased QuickBooks Online Plus.  I imported our data, but I cannot figure out if it is even possible to enter donations with the same information as possible with our desktop edition.

Before making this purchase I chatted online with a representative from Intuit and was told that Quickbooks Online Plus would be the best match for us.

I'd like to know whether it was wrong to transition to this online version.

What does "improve data security" mean? Imho, actually QB Online is riskier than QB Desktop in this matter. If you are eligible, you can purchase the one time license for QB Desktop 2021 from TechSoup with a special rate to upgrade your version. Otherwise, you can purchase it with a higher price from some partners.

I admire your loyalty to QuickBooks, @j45780.

You've made the right choice in using QuickBooks Online (QBO). Rest assured I'm here to guide you on how to record donations in QBO.

Recording a donation to QBO only requires a few steps. Let me show how:

  1. Create an in-kind donation account and a clearing account.
  2. Add or create a product or service item for the donation.
  3. Create a sales receipt to record the in-kind donation.

You can also see this article for the complete process: Set up and record in-kind donations in QuickBooks Online.

Furthermore, I'd recommend working with your accountant for additional advice. This way, we can ensure the accuracy of your accounts after recording this.

In case you want to learn how to record a charitable contribution, please feel free to check this resource for guidance: How to record donations or charitable contributions.

I've also added this article that can help you navigate your QBO after importing your data: What to do after you move from QuickBooks Desktop for Windows or Mac to QuickBooks Online.

I'll be around if you have any other concerns or questions about recording donations in QBO. I'll be more than happy to work with you again. Have a great weekend!
