Join nowQBD allows you to change order of accounts in Chart of Accounts, which also changes order for P&L. I want to do the same in QBO, but I can't find out how. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
Hi @Radian,
You can change the sort order of accounts in the Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks Online (QBO). Your options are Name, Type, Currency, QuickBooks Balance, and Bank Balance. Keep in mind that this change is exclusive and won't affect the Profit and Loss report.
The Profit and Loss report itself is sorted by income accounts, followed by expense accounts, and lastly, the net income. There isn't an option to change this order at this time.

Let me rephrase my context and question: QBD allows the user to change order of accounts in Chart of Accounts (drag-and-drop feature), which also changes order of accounts on P&L. How can I accomplish the same outcome in QBO? We just converted from QBD to QBO. Some of the account ordering (deliberately non-numerical and non-alphabetical) remained in place; which is want I wanted. However, some of it reverted back to numerical in QBO. Here's why this is an issue: The Chart of Accounts (that I inherited; I didn’t create) followed a first-digit schema (Income 4000 level, COGS 5000 level, Expense 6000 level), but the 2nd, 3rd and 4th digits of account numbers appear to have been selected at random, so numerical order hierarchy creates a P&L output that is disorienting and odd-looking; sorting alphabetically by account names also produces P&L output that is odd-looking.
I expected QBO to have the same drag-and-drop capability as QBD, but I can’t figure out how to do it.
Am I missing something?
Has anyone conjured a work-around?
Joining the thread to answer your question, Radian.
For now, not all features in QuickBooks Desktop is available in QuickBooks Online. Being able to rearrange the Chart of Accounts using the drag-and-drop function is one of them.
In the meantime, you can follow the steps in the first response on how you can sort the list of accounts. Please see these articles about managing the Chart of Accounts in QBO for additional reference:
