Data Clean Up/POS Performance

      We have been using QB POS Pro since 12/24/15. We started on 2013, then upgraded to v12, and are now on Desktop 18. We have also had an Intuit merchant account since day 1. I’m trying to run the data clean-up and remove all receipts prior to 2018. I ran the clean up however only cash transactions were removed. I called QuickBooks and was told that this was expected since the transactions were linked to an Intuit merchant account. I am posting this here because I have heard both that this is expected and that it’s not. There were close to 400,000 receipts in the history and after the clean up, we are down to about 140,000. The POS is running considerably slow as you can imagine. I was also told that this was possibly a corruption in my data file. We have a second business that started using QB POS this year. It was a clean install on Desktop 18 with nothing transferred from the first business. I tested removing a months worth of transactions as the database already has close to 50,000 receipts in the history. The same issue occurred here and only cash transactions were removed. As this issue has existed since we started on QB POS 2013, I’m inclined to believe this is expected. If that’s the case, then I was just curious to know what other users are doing to improve performance or if QB POS was not designed for this volume of transactions.

When performing the Clean Up Company Data utility, it optimizes the QuickBooks Point of Sale (POS) data file. This results in faster searches, lookups, and reporting in the software. Also, this removes old transactions and other information from your data file.

If a workstation or network running POS seems to be very slow, you can try re-configuring your virus scanning software. Most virus scanning software scans all files in all folders by default and may result from decrease performance in the software.

 

I'd suggest contacting your IT guy before making any changes to make sure you understand the consequences of those changes.

 

If the same thing happens, please contact our POS Technical Support Team. They'll investigate what's causing this issue. They'll also check if there's a damaged data in the company file causing POS's slow performance.

  1. Click Help on the top menu.
  2. Choose Help & Support.
  3. Under Can’t find your answer? section, click contact us.
  4. Click Search for something else.
  5. Enter improve POS performance in the Tell us more about your question: field and click Search.
  6. Click Start a Message to connect with us.

Just wanted to provide an update after I spoke with level 2 support. The receipts are not being removed by the clean up because it is expected that the business will retain sales receipt data of all transactions processed using the Intuit merchant account forever or until a new POS data file is created. It is also expected for the system to slow down as mine is because of the amount of transactions POS is being forced to hold on to. POS is the only program open on these machines and the systems resources aren’t being maxed out, so the only thing we could determine was that the database size was growing too large. 

The specs for my POS station. i5-8500 @ 3.0 Ghz, 8 GB DDR4, 256 GB SSD.
