Re: error when creating backup

Hi there, @Alamal,

I'm here to give you the steps on how to resolve the back up error you're getting in QuickBooks.

This error normally occur when your Windows access isn't configured to perform tasks like saving QB files. In your case, since you're already signed in as Admin, try reviewing your permissions or add a custom user with Admin rights. Check out this article for the steps: Add, edit or create Windows users with Administrator rights

Another option is to enable the built-in administrator account. It has a lot more privileges than a regular administrator account. We recommend only enabling this if you need to troubleshoot a specific problem, and disabling it when you are done. I highly recommend contacting an IT professional while doing this.

Enable Built- In Admin Account

  1. Open command prompt by clicking on the Start icon.
  2. Enter for CMD in the search box
  3. Right click on the CMD file and select Run as administrator.
  4. If you are in Windows 8.or 10 you can right-click on the Start button and choose to open a command prompt (admin).
  5. Type this command: net user administrator /active:yes.
  6. Hit Enter
  7. You'll receive a message saying command completed successfully, Logout and you will now see the Administrator account as a choice.
  8. Please be mindful that there’s no password for this account, if you want to leave it enabled you should update its password.

Once you're done, re-run the backup under the hidden Admin access. Once successful, disable the Admin account. Here's how:

  1. Login into your regular account, open CMD in Admin mode like showed above.
  2. Type the following command: net user administrator /active:no.

Please update me on how the troubleshooting steps goes. I'm here if you need further help. Have a nice day!

Re: error when creating backup

Thanks for the update, @alamal1.

I also appreciate you for performing the steps provided by my colleague in this thread.

Every version of QuickBooks has a corresponding component that needs to be updated for the system to function. To help diagnose and fix these errors, let's download and run the QuickBooks File Doctor. This tool analyzes your computer if it's set up correctly.

If you're getting the same result, this can be caused by one or more of the following:

  • The file is saved in a protected location such as the root of C:// Drive or Program Files of a Windows Vista, 7 or 8.
  • The file is located in a restricted location.
  • Folder permissions are not set up properly.
  • The folder where the company file is saved is damaged.

Please follow the solution outlined below to get rid of the error:

Solution 1: Move the company file to the default location

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Browse to the location of your company file.
  3. Right-click the company file (.qbw), then select Copy.
  4. Browse to the default location, right-click and select Paste.Location: C://Users/Public/PublicDocuments/Intuit/QuickBooks/Company Files
  5. Open the company file from the default location.

Solution 2: Create a new folder for the company file(s)

  1. Create a new folder in the same directory.
  2. Copy your company files to the new folder.
  3. Do not forget to set up folder permissions to share company files.
  4. From the File menu, select Open or restore a company.
  5. Select Open a company file, then Next
  6. Browse to the new folder and select a company file.
  7. Select Open.

Solution 3: Test and Set folder permissions.

  1. Open Microsoft Word or notepad.
  2. Type in "Test".
  3. Save the file to the same location where the company file is saved.
  4. If the file saves without issues, your folder has the correct permissions.

You can also check out this article for other troubleshooting steps: Error -6000, -83: An error occurred. This article provides detailed steps when you receive unexpected errors when opening, backing up, or restoring company file.

Keep me posted on how this goes and I'll get back to you.

Re: error when creating backup

Good work for doing the troubleshooting steps my colleagues provided, Alamal1.

It should let you create a backup already. Since you're unable to do so, I'd already suggest reaching out to our technical support for an agent to take a better look at this. They have more tools, like screen sharing, which can help you investigate the error further.

Here's how to get in touch:

  1. Click the Help menu inside QuickBooks.
  2. Go to QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. In the Have a Question? window, click Contact Us.
  4. Enter a brief detail about your concern, then click Continue.
  5. Select either Message an Agent or Talk to a Specialist

You're welcome to post in the Community in case you have other concerns.
