File won't open!

Is anyone else getting a message that they're not the administrator and to close the file??  HELP! Is it an update that is causing this?

File won't open!

We didn't receive a similar report, RevoluSun.

However, there are different reasons as to why company files won't open:

  • corrupted or damaged QuickBooks Company file.
  • the file is already opened by another user on the shared network.
  • using wrong methods to open particular file types.
  • issues with reports in the file.
  • issues like access permissions, encrypted or compressed files, problems with filename and extension, and corruption of the data within the file.

For more information about this, you can check out this recommended article: Resolve Problems Opening QuickBooks Desktop or your Company File.

If you need more assistance in resolving this, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Desktop support.

  1. Click Help at the top menu and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. In the Have a Question? window, enter a topic.
  3. Click Contact us.
  4. Hit the Start Messaging button.

Stay in touch with me if you have other concerns.

File won't open!

I just got off the phone with support and she said this has been going on since last night and she said support has been slammed with calls.  I had to open the file by right clicking and running as an administrator and it would open and let me update.   She said she wasn't sure if it was a QB update or a Windows but it's a problem.

File won't open!

It's a good thing that you have a workaround in opening your QuickBooks file, but in order to get rid of the inconvenience, I have other steps that you can perform to resolve this issue, RevoluSun.

You can download and install the QuickBooks Tools Hub to fix the common errors. Here are the steps on what you are going to do.

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Make sure to download the most recent version (1.4.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Save the file somewhere you can easily find it (like your Downloads folder or your Windows desktop). If you've already installed it before, select the Home tab.  The version will be displayed at the bottom right or you can select About to view the version.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. Once done, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.

Next, run the Quick Fix Program so it will repair your program.

  1. In the QuickBooks Tools Hub, select Program Problems.
  2. Select Quick Fix my Program.
  3. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

However, if it won't still open you can proceed to Solution 2 of this article.

File won't open!

Allow me to help you locate your company file, RevoluSun.

Open your computer folder and do a wildcard search for all of your company files. Type one of the following into the search bar. Make sure to include the asterisk (*) to ensure the search works correctly.

  • Working Files = *.qbw
  • Back Up Files = *.qbb
  • Accountants Copy Files = *.qba
  • Accountants Transfer Files = *.qbx
  • Accountants Change Files = *.qby

Once the file is found, take note of the file's location. However, if the file is not found, you'll want to contact an IT professional for them to help you locate your company file.
