Hi @davidjeastman , i got your concern.
No, you just make it inactive for deleting customer. As a workaround you could change the old customer to new customer then reactive it or just change the customer name with "no customer" etc.
Glad to assist you.

If you make them inactive, will we still be charged the monthly fee? Can we re-activate later?
Hello there, @szslk.
I'll be glad to share information about the monthly fee charged and how to re-active customers in QuickBooks.
Once you make your customer inactive, you'll still be charged since the subscription is a fixed amount every month for QuickBooks Online.
Yes, you can still re-activate your customer in case you want them to be active again. Let me guide you how:
I've included screenshots on how to make a customer Inactive and Active again for visual references.
Also, before making a customer inactive, take note that the customer is removed from the Customers area, reporting options, and any other place where customers are listed.
For more details, you can check out this article: Make a customer inactive and then active.
I'm also including these articles that can help you manage your customers. It also contains steps on how to customize your customers page, run report, merge duplicate customers, etc.
I'm always here if you still have questions about your customers. Take care and have a wonderful day!
