I'm trying to update permissions for a role but getting an error "This role has one or more provisional users associated with it..." How do I fix this?

Hi there, d_barnum.

Let me assist you in updating the user permissions in QuickBooks Online.

Before doing so, please note that it'll affect all users under that role. The changes apply the next time they log in. What I can suggest is to change their role before you edit it, then let's reassign them.

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Manage users.
  2. Under the Users tab, find the users of the role and click Edit.
  3. Find a temporary Role and hit Save.

Once done, go to the Roles tab, locate the role you want to update, and click Edit. Then, click Next and Save. Let's go back to the Users tab and follow the same steps on how to change their role back to the original one.

If none of these helps, we can perform some troubleshooting steps. Start by using an incognito window and update it from there. You can also clear the cache since it can cause errors in QuickBooks Online.

Lastly, make sure that the browser is updated. I've added this article for more details about add and manage custom roles in QuickBooks Online Advanced.

Please comment below if you have other questions. I'll be here!

It still won't allow me to update the role.  It says 'This role has one or more provisional users associated with it'.  The role still says '1 user', but when I click that it has nothing listed.  I also can't see the provisional user in the list of users.

Thanks for the reply, d_barnum.

Another thing we need to make sure is that you are a master admin of the QuickBooks Online account. Please note that only those with admin access can manage or edit users and roles.

If you don't have this access, you may seek some help from the company admin. This could be the reason why you can't see the user of that role.

It's also best to reach out to our Customer Support Team. They can take a look at it and check what's causing this error.

  1. Go to Help and select Contact Us.
  2. Enter the prompt message and hit Let's talk.
  3. Choose either ChatSchedule a call, or We'll call you.

If you're the new master admin, find out how the current master admin can transfer the role to you.

Please leave a reply again if you have other concerns. Wishing you all the best!

  2. At the bottom, click Contact Us.
  3. From the dialogue box, enter your concern.
  4. Click Let's talk.
  5. Choose either Message an agent or Get a callback.
