importing data from another laptop to new

Hi there, @needtoknow20.

There will be no problem in upgrading your QuickBooks Desktop 2016 to 2021 version. I'd be glad to walk you through the steps on how to upgrade.

First off, we'll need to create a backup file to make sure that the data will be saved before upgrading. To get started, let's perform the following steps to back up your company file:

  1. Go to the File menu, choose Back Up Company, then select Create Local Backup.
  2. Select Local Backup.
  3. Click Options.
  4. In the Tell us where to save your backup copies field, select Browse and select the location in which to save the backup copy.
  5. Hit OK.
  6. In the Create Backup window, specify whether to back up automatically, and select Options to set options for automatic backups.
  7. Select New to set a backup schedule in the Schedule Backups dialog.
  8. Click Finish.

I've got you an article for your reference: Create a Backup of your Company File.

Once done, you can now upgrade your QuickBooks Desktop 2016 to 2021 version. For your reference, you can check out this article for the detailed steps and information: Upgrade to a New QuickBooks Desktop Version.

@needtoknow20

Copy the QBB file created on your old QB and put it in a new folder on your new machine. Open your QB 2021 and restore the file

Jumping in the thread to quickly answer your question about moving your company file, needtoknow20.

When creating the backup copy, save it on a flash or an external device. Then, plug it in your new laptop so you can restore it in your QuickBooks 2021. You can also follow these steps on how to restore the file:

  1. Open your QuickBooks 2021.
  2. Go to the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.
  3. Click Restore a backup copy, then click Next.
  4. Select Local Backup and then Next.
  5. Look for the external drive where the file is saved. Then, browse your computer for your backup company file. It should look like this: [Your company name].qbb.
  6. Select a folder to decide where to save your restored company file. Then click Open.

Here's an article about this for more details: Move Your Company Files To Another Computer.

Also, you will need to upgrade your company file after restoring it. This is to make it compatible in the newer version of QuickBooks. Follow the steps in this article for additional reference: Upgrade Your Company Files After Switching To A New Version Of QuickBooks Desktop.
