Interface change on split transactions

When categorizing transactions, I often split them into multiple categories. Just today I noticed the interface changed in a small but very inconvenient way. Previously, I could do this data entry entirely with the keyboard. Now, that seems impossible.

On the "Split transaction" popup screen, you can enter the transaction category, description, amount, etc for each line. I normally fill in one box, then hit tab to go to the next box, and enter the entire multi-line transaction with the keyboard. At the end of the a, hitting tab again would bring me down onto the next line. Now, hitting tab at the end selects the trashcan, and then hitting tab one more time "clicks" on the trash can, deleting the line I was just working on. There's no way you can use the arrows to get to the line below, and there's no way you can tab to get there either. So you must switch to using the mouse. Every line split, every transaction, I have to switch to the mouse. It seems like a small inconvenience, but it adds up.

Please get your UX engineer on this, pronto. It should be an easy fix. Thanks.

Interface change on split transactions

Hey there, andrew-L. Thanks for trying the troubleshooting steps presented by my colleague.

I went ahead and took a look in our test drive account to see if other users are experiencing the same result when using Tab (on a keyboard) to move from one field to another. It presented me with the same results you're seeing:

Since this is now how the product functions, your best workaround will be to make use of a mouse when necessary.

Changes like this are generally discussed in our What's New in QBO Archives. The most recent article published there is for July 2020, and it doesn't mention anything about this update. There should be one released for August as well. I recommend keeping an eye out for that.

Interface change on split transactions

Thanks for bringing this into our attention, @andrew-L.

There are times that too much cache files stored in the browser can cause unexpected behavior with the product. It would be best to perform some basic troubleshooting steps to fix this.

To start, let's logging in to your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account via a private browser. It's also a great way to isolate the issue since it doesn't store data in the cache.

Please use these shortcut keys to access a private browser:

  •  Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Safari: Command + Option + N

Then, let's go back to the Split transaction page and enter the transactions then click the Tab to go to the next box. If it works, then you need to clear your browser's cache so the system can start fresh. This way, the stored cache will be deleted on the browser so it'll function efficiently.

You can also use another supported browser as an alternative if you still experiencing this unexpected behavior.

You can get more details about the matching process as well as categorizing your transactions in this article: Match and categorize bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.

Once done, you can start reconciling your bank account. You can follow the steps in this article: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.

Please let me know if you need further assistance, or if there's anything else I can do for you. I'll be happy to help you some more.

Interface change on split transactions

Chrome incognito browser did not change the behavior. This behavior change also went along with a handful of other small, helpful UX changes, like being able to change column widths more easily. So that leads me to believe this was actually a real change, too, not just some overflowing cache issue on my end.

Best wishes,

Andrew

That's an outrageous answer, IMHO.

Since the beginning of Windows, it's been a design principle that all actions should be able to be done from the keyboard. It's required for many users with disabilities.
