New 2019 MAC on a wired network slow

We upgraded from MAC 2015 to 2019 - NOTHING Else changed!!!!

When using 2019 and entering a new bill or a new check or anything it goes into a 40 second loop.

2015 worked fine the day before the 2019 MAC Update.

If we move the data file from the wired network drive and temporarily install it on the desktop computer it works fine.

The network is robust and is used by a team of architects, only one person uses QBs, with no problems.

The size of the file is 47MB for 2019 and 37MB for 2015.

New 2019 MAC on a wired network slow

Thanks for checking in with us, wlcummings.

Let's get your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019 back up and running smoothly on a wired network.

To improve the performance and prevent any delays in response time, ensure that your network setup is within these recommendations.

System requirements:

  • At least Mac OS X v10.12 (Sierra); Supported by Mac OS X v10.14 (Mojave), 10.13 (High Sierra)
  • CD/DVD drive or Internet connection for the downloaded installation
  • Intel Processor - Core 2 Duo or higher
  • Multi-user Server - Intel Core 2 Duo or higher processor to run the server
  • 2 GB RAM (4 GB RAM recommended)
  • 250 MB of available disk space
  • Product registration required

After that, let's try to update QuickBooks Desktop for Mac to its latest release version.

In-product update:

  1. Go to the QuickBooks Desktop menu and select Check for QuickBooks Updates.
  2. If a newer version of QuickBooks Desktop is available, click Install Update.
  3. When prompted, click Install and Relaunch. When the update is complete QuickBooks Desktop for Mac will automatically open.

If the problem persists, you can check out these recommended articles for other solutions:

As always, you can reach out to our QuickBooks for Mac Support if you'd like someone to be with you as you go through these steps. They can pull up your account in a secure environment and assist you further.

Sounds like you are keeping the company file on a disk on a remote computer and mounting that disk on the local machine where you are running QuickBooks.  That has never been a supported approach - the reason is that it can lead to data damage.  This is due to the use of a network file system (usually SMB on modern MacOSs).  The network file systems don't support file locking correctly in many cases.

What you should do instead is run the QuickBooks Server on the remote computer and then serve the QB file from that.  Other machines in your internal network can then connect to the served up company file.  This should be faster but more importantly it is safer.

A single license allows any of the remote computers to connect to the file as long as no two connect at the same time (it will actively block that).   Whereas in the situation you have now two users _could_ connect at the same time which can also lead to data corruption.   If you need two users to work simultaneously you need only buy another license (or another copy of QB Mac 2019).

Spoke to some of the engineers and they suggest trying File->Utilities->Rebuild to rebuild the indices. Questions are:

1. Does QB hang with a beachball cursor for 40 seconds after making a change? (trying to understand the meaning of "loop" in your description).

2. What is the OS of the machine doing the sharing?

Still I think using the QuickBooks Server is the best practice - remote mounted drives rely on network file systems that can have issues with locking.

When you say "Quickbooks Server" do you mean install Quickbooks on the Server (ie. network drive)? Then execute (start) Quickbooks on the desktop MAC using the data file on the same server drive as Quickbooks?

Yes the beachball curser is like a mini windmill for 40 seconds.

Thank you for getting back to us, wlcummings.

To answer your question, yes. QuickBooks Server is used to host the file on a network drive. You can follow the suggestions given by @IntuitBrooks to complete this task.

Then, refer to this article for more details about troubleshooting multi-user issues for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

I am trying to get information on "Quickbooks Server" and none at the sales department know what that is? Can you explain the use of Quickbooks Server and its use with Quickbooks desktop MAC.

I tried to call Quickbooks support and get put on hold for 30 minutes then transferred to a higher support person and hold again for 30 minutes then get disconnected.

Hello wlcummings,

Thanks for getting back to us here in the Community. Allow me to chime in and provide additional information concerning your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019.

QuickBooks Server is an app that you need to install and run on the host computer. It's mainly for allowing multi-user access and sharing the company file through the network.

There are several factors why your QuickBooks program is running slow. Like one of our peer users, I also want to know the OS of the computer you're currently using for sharing.

Please take time to check the system requirements for the latest version to ensure smooth navigation. You can also try performing the basic troubleshooting for possible data damage.

For the detailed steps, you can visit the article I recommend on this: Resolving Potential Data Issues.

Please keep in touch with me here should you need any further assistance with using the QuickBooks program. The Community will be sure to get back to you.

Regard QuickBooks Server - yes, its a separate app that is included with your copy of QuickBooks (its on the install disk or disk image).  Run that on the server machine then choose File->Open in that app and open your company file (which is local to the server machine).

Anyone running QuickBooks on your network will see the shared file.  For the first time have them launch QuickBooks while holding down the option key or else it will automatically load the file the old way.  Once they do that they'll see a shared files section in the No Company Open window.  Then they can connect that way - its much safer.

I am still confused. Is Quickbooks Server for using Quickbooks MAC in a a multi simultaneous user environment or us it used for single user environment as well? I do not remember "Quickbooks Server" in our installation delivery.

Allow me to join in this thread, @wlcummings.

I'm here to share additional information on how QuickBooks Multi-User works.

A QuickBooks Server or host computer is where QuickBooks is installed and the company files are stored and shared on your network with other QuickBooks
users. This is used for customers who have more than one user license and  running QuickBooks in multiuser mode.

Here's how to set it up:

  1. Buy and install additional user seats
    1. Go to QuickBooks.
    2. Choose Manage License.
    3. Select Buy Additional Licenses.
    4. Follow the on-screen instruction to buy additional licenses.
    5. Go to QuickBooks.
    6. Select Manage Licenses.
    7. Choose Sync License.
    8. Install QuickBooks.
  2. Install QuickBooks Server
  3. Create user accounts
  4. Start multi-user mode

For more details, you may check this guide: QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019 User's Guide ( Go to page 26.).

Don't hesitate to ping me if you have other questions about using QuickBooks Mac on a multi-user mode. I'm always here to help.
