Quickbooks Online Desktop App v4.0.9 loses open window Tabs when signing on

Sorry, but I'm not sure what to call the Quickbooks Desktop Application that works with the Online version as it's a hybrid I guess.

It has been well documented how the 3 hour auto sign off is disruptive to the daily lives of bookkeepers and accountants all over the world who use this service.  We understand the security risks involved, but Intuit took it upon themselves to simply turn us off and take away this responsibility of the individual.  Let's get real for a second shall we???  If we, bookkeepers, accountants, owners, or other, are ignorant enough to leave sensitive information open when we leave the gadget accessing the account, then it is they who are responsible, not Intuit. 'nough said...

Alright, so I decided to try this Desktop Hybrid Application on Windows 10 once again.  My first experience a year ago, was less than desirable.  However, I decided to give it another try.  Now that I know of the many problems I face using the Online tools, I figured perhaps the desktop version I could handle better.  It just so happens things like opening multiple companies on the desktop version works whereas Intuit is still trying to figure out why this not working on the Online version.

My issue once again, comes to this automatic timeout.  I may leave my computer with 3 or 4 companies open and with as many as 10 or 12 tabs.  Yes, I know I push my computer resources, but as a retired IT guy, I know what my computer can handle.  I might just have to tun to the store to pick up milk or take a break and go to Starbucks with a client.  When returning 3 or 4 hours later, all my tabs are still open - Excellent - NOT!!!  When I try to do one thing, I get an error.  It doesn't even tell me I need to sign in again, it just gives me the "Something is not quite right" message.

Knowing it is an auto sign off issue, after going to the gear icon to sign off and sign back on, "ALL" the tabs shut down!!!

Please tell me there is a way to keep these tabs open after I sign back on.  Please do not hit me up with a canned answer.  The only link I need is to understand how to keep these tabs open.  I do not need links about shortcuts or other unrelated information.

Thank you.

Update:  Upon opening up another tab for a client, I received a message attached.  Again, this is before I went and signed off and signed back on.  After I signed back on, obviously this message no longer shows.  Once again it comes back to this auto logoff "feature"...  See Attached

I appreciate you sharing about the logoff feature in QuickBooks, Budget Friendly Bookkeeping.

The timeout duration in QuickBooks Online has a maximum of three hours. The time of inactivity starts from the last time you saved, use the mouse, or keyboard.

As what you've mentioned, the feature is created for security purposes. Though you're aware of the risks, Intuit still wants to make sure your data is protected.

Your feedback will help our product developers improve the QuickBooks Windows App and other QB features.

If you have other suggestions you want to share, you can always leave your reply on this thread. I'll be sure to note and send them to our developers.

Quickbooks Online Desktop App v4.0.9 loses open window Tabs when signing on

Let me ask a really stupid question:  How does Intuit protect anyone who uses a Desktop application being open indefinitely?

Why should Intuit decide that they are responsible for logging anyone off for "security" purposes?

Are you simply not telling us what is really going on and that Intuit cannot have a file open on their server sitting idle?  If this is the reason, then please, just tell us that and we can then understand why this happens.  But to simply say they are protecting us is a ridiculous policy.

In this new world of cloud based business, I am still getting used to the inefficiencies of all that come with it. This is one simple little issue that can stop unnecessary work by allowing our multiple windows to remain open, even if we do have to log in again.

C'mon developers.  Are you even holding any sort of focus group of users to see where these inefficiencies occur?  Do you even read the yelling and screaming of users on these boards?

I get it, I do.  Knock it out, move on to the next project.  But this level of support will turn away people who have been avid Quickbook fans for near 3 decades...

And now I just found out that QBO does not integrate with Turbotax - wow!  That was a huge selling point with QBD...

So basically, QBO is nothing more then a video game - right...

No answer required please.  I need to keep my blood pressure in check today.

Hello there, @Budget Friendly Bookkeeping.

I agree that it takes time when you keep getting timed out in a tab, and needing to sign back in again.

As mentioned by my colleague MaryLurleenM, this feature is created for security purposes to ensure that you're data is well protected from the inactivity starts.

The ability to directly import your data to Turbotax Desktop is not yet available. You'll have to convert your QuickBooks Online data to QuickBooks Desktop using a trial subscription. For a step-by-step importing process, you may check out this article: How do I import QuickBooks data into TurboTax Business?

In the meantime, I would recommend giving our QuickBooks Online Support Team a quick call. They can further explain and investigate this automatic time off in QuickBooks Online Desktop App.

Here's how to get our contact information:

  1. Go to the (?) Help icon.
  2. Click Contact Us.
  3. Enter a brief discussion of your concern and click Let's talk.
  4. Then, choose Get a callback.

If you have any other concerns or questions, don't hesitate to drop by here in the Community. I'm always here to help. Take good care!

Aha!!!  You hit the nail on the head!!!  What I need to do is develop some sort of mechanical mouse who runs all over my keyboard every couple of hours.  Even better, get a mouse and put the computer mouse in his habitat where he can play with it which will constantly move it around on the screen thereby never logging me out.

SO SIMPLE!!!   I simply have to get a patent on this idea ;)...

I'm sure there's something out there that will continually move my mouse around to keep my desktop active - hmmmmm....  Anyone have any suggestions???  The only problem is, I have a touch pad, so I need a mechanical finger - lol...
