restoring QB2012 from data folder

I am an IT knowledgeable person assisting a friend with their QuickBooks. They need to restore all data from from QB2012. They do not have the QBB file but they have a copy of the Intuit\quickbooks2012\data folder. How can I use this to restore a QB accessible copy of the data?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Ricky

Find any *.QBW, *.QBB, *.QBM file to be restored. As for last resort, find any ADR file.

restoring QB2012 from data folder

Hello, Rickaay.

Thanks for stopping by, I'm happy to help you and your friend restore their data. To do so, depends on a couple things, are the filings transferring from one computer to another, another location but the same computer or are you just trying to move the entirety of the QuickBooks data folder. Regardless, I have the steps to help you out down below in a really helpful article. If you're transferring the data to a completely new computer, follow these steps, otherwise you can find the steps in the article I linked above.

  1. Before you start, make sure you install QuickBooks Desktop on the new computer.
  2. Follow the steps to create a backup company file on your original computer.
  3. When you save the backup file, give it a unique name so it's easy to identify. This also prevents accidental overwrites.
  4. Save the backup file somewhere you can easily find it, like your Windows desktop.
  5. Move the backup company file to your new computer. You can either put the backup on a flash drive or an external device. Or you can share it if your new computer is on the same network.
  6. Follow the steps to restore the backup on your new computer. Remember, it should have a unique file name.
  7. If you use payroll, download the latest tax table after you move your file.

Thank you for your time and if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to post them here. Have a nice day.

Thank very much you for your response.

We do not have  *.QBW, *.QBB or  *.QBM  files available. Another support person did a factory reset of teh machine to recover from OS problems.

All we have is the *.dat files from the Intuit\Quickbooks\Data\  folder from an older .  I cannot judge of course if the files that I see are enough to result in a functional QB environment.

@Rickaay

ADR files are your last resort. It is possible the machine is reinstalled with a fresh QuickBooks files with no company files.

Thank you @Fiat Lux - ASIA

OK, I follow that. Thank you.

After the fresh install, can I recover by just copying the *.dat that I found back to the Intuit\QuickBooks\Data\ folder ? A picture of the filename list is attached.

*.dat is not part of any company file

Thank you  @Fiat Lux - ASIA. Understood !

Looking at the names of the files I was fearing that that, but not knowing the data files setup, I just wanted to be sure. Thank you for your time and patience!

Ricky !
