Revert tax forms to 2017

I need to file a 2017 940 annual report that was missed but already have the 2018 forms downloaded.  Is there a way to revert to 2017 so I can run the report and then back to the 2018 version?

Revert tax forms to 2017

Greetings, @szuchalady.

It's nice to see you here in the Community. I'm here to share some information about filing a prior year annual 940 form in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

QuickBooks only holds the current year tax forms and reverting them back to 2017 is unavailable. However, If you want to process tax form in a prior year, you can download the form through the IRS website. Here's how:

1. Go to:
2. Click Forms & Instructions, then pick Prior Year on the left panel.
3. Locate and select the Form 940 (2017), then click the Download icon.

Once downloaded, pull up the Form 940 inside QuickBooks and enter 2017 as the Filing Period date and it'll populate the previous period’s payroll data and will display the current year format or period date stamp. You can use this information as a reference for filling out the form you downloaded from the IRS.

Here's how:

1. Go to Employees menu at the top, then pick Payroll Center on the drop-down.
2. Click the File Forms tab, then locate and select the Annual Form 940.
3. Type 2017 on the SELECT FILING PERIOD, then OK twice.

You may also run the Tax Form Worksheet report for the filing period you need and use the tax and wage data to manually fill out the prior year form. Here's how:

1. Go to Reports menu at the top, then pick Employees & Payroll.

2. Choose More Payroll Reports in Excel, then Tax Form Worksheet.

Once done, you can now send the form to the IRS via mail. You may check out this link for more information: Just in case you need it, here's a helpful article that tackles e-filing 940, 941, and/or 944 Federal Forms in QBDT for future reference.

That should help you file your 2017 Form 940. Please let me know how it goes of if I can be of additional assistance. I'm only a post away if you have any follow-up questions. Have a great rest of the day!
