script error when opening QB Pro 2016

Two or three days ago I started getting a script error box when opening my QB Pro 2016. I can dismiss it and continue to work in program. I did the following steps:  selected Internet Options, Security tab, clicked Trusted sites, cliked trusted sites and the sites, entered intuit.com, then add.  Told to turn-off Show Live Community option on program under edit menu, but it is not there.  Any suggestions?

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

Hi there, lfrates.

Script errors in QuickBooks occurs when the commands can not be executed correctly due to some program issues.

We have prepared some troubleshooting guides to help you resolve these errors.

The first guide is by operating the Internet Explorer browser in compatibility view:

  1. In Internet Explorer, select the Gear icon at the top right.
  2. Select Tools and select Compatibility View settings.
  3. On the Compatibility View settings screen, check the Display all websites in Compatibility View box.
  4. Click Close.

 Let's also make sure to add Intuit as a trusted site:

  1. In the Tools section on the Internet Explorer browser, go to the Security tab.
  2. Select Trusted Sites and then click the Sites button.
  3. In the Add this website to the zone field, enter https://*.intuit.com and click Add. Repeat this step for https://*.quickbooks.com.
  4. Click Close to get out of the Trusted sites window.
  5. Select Custom level... then scroll down to Miscellaneous.
  6. Under Allow Cross domain requests, choose Enable, then click OK.
  7. Click Apply then OK to close the Internet Options window.
  8. Restart Internet Explorer to apply the changes.

If you're still getting the script errors, let's follow other solutions laid out in these articles:

On the other note, we might also want to consider upgrading to the latest QuickBooks Desktop version. 2016 version has reached its dawn, and some major services that we are offering like the electronic payments, payroll, etc. have been discontinued. With this, that's the reason why you're getting some random errors when using the software. Please see this reference: QuickBooks Desktop Discontinuation Hub

We are always here to make sure you're QuickBooks is up and running. Post your comments below.

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

I'm sorry, but there's no excuse for a scripting error like this. So what if new features aren't available. I have QB Pro 2016. I'm not going to spend hundreds to fix a problem that shouldn't have happened due to whatever Quicken has decided are new features that have nothing to do with older versions. And, what does the https://cdn.optimizely.com website running a Javascript have to do with QuickBooks?? Bizarre. This is clearly a configuration issue.

Level 2

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

There's no excuse for this. Why should I have to pay hundreds to use a program I already paid for and was working fine until Quicken decided to introduce errors? No way. This is pretty typical for Quicken, that seems to think it's just fine to hijack people's time and money. What the heck does the website cdn.optimizely.com and the associated Javascript file have to do with me using a program I paid for??

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

Here's the scripting error message popup. This needs to be fix. This has nothing to do with end of life. This is a stand-alone program, and unless there was a Windows update of which I'm not aware, this and any other program shouldn't be affected.

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

Hi there, jgsailor.

Thanks for the screenshot and I also appreciate you for performing the steps to add the URL as a trusted site. This is one of the troubleshooting steps when getting a script error.

The next step you need to do is configure the Firewall and set the anti-virus settings. This is to ensure the internet access will go through without any issues.

If you're receiving this message when you're not on the internet, this could be a result of any third-party software conflict. Please follow the steps listed below to avoid any third-party software conflict.

Step 1: Start the computer in a Safe Mode.

Step 2: Perform a Clean boot.

Let me know how this goes by leaving a comment below and I'll get back to you.

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

Actually, I thought I found the problem, but it looks like I didn't. The steps I took were to:

1) Download and installing the QuickBooks Tool Hub (https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/login-issues/fix-common-problems-and-errors-with-t...).

2) Closing QB, and running it. This found a lot of errors, some of which it corrected I believe (hard to tell, as it scrolled by very quickly). This didn't solve the scripting problem.

3) Run a Program and Features repair. I allowed it to make changes to Windows components, which require a reboot.

When I first started the program after doing the steps, I didn't get the scripting error, but it looks like it's back.

I haven't made any changes to the system in the last many weeks, and this problem started a few days ago. There are no Internet connectivity issues.

The question I have is why is some non-intuit or MS site being used for a javascript? My guess is that it has something to do with the annoying popup advertising Black Monday. That's when the script started failing.

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

This popup happens pretty much at the exact same time as the ad box is activated.

Thanks and welcome to the Community, jgsailor.

The Script Error prompt in QuickBooks happens when the internet settings of the default browser are incorrect or misconfigured. To resolve the issue, please make sure to add QuickBooks as a trusted website.

Here's how:

1. Close down the window of QuickBooks application.

2. Open Internet Explorer and click the Gear icon at the top right corner of the Internet Explorer.

3. Select Tools and choose Internet Options.

4. Now unmark Display a Notification About Every Script Error checkbox under the Advanced tab.

5. Hit OK and restart QuickBooks.

Also, to keep you in the loop about the latest features being rolled out, visit the Firm of the Future site.

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

Already did that, along with configuring the Firewall and anti-virus/malware settings.

Didn't make one bit of difference.

Also, "repaired the program" with Windows and used the QB Tools Hub.

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

In QuickBooks on the menu bar click HELP>Internet Connection Setup>Next>Advanced Connection Setting>Security (tab)>Restricted Sites>Sites. In the "Add this website to the zone:" paste or type the web site the error message is complaining about, such as uxfabric.intuitcdn.net, as and example. Click Add>Close>OK>Done.

Logoff QuickBooks and then log back in. The script error message will no longer appear.

This can be used for all script error messages. I have encountered several. They all seem to be connected to "User Experience Enhancement" (aka User Tracking) that are not functioning correctly. Blocking them does not affect the software....other than to block some pop-up ads Intuit may try to send.

You can answer YES or NO to get past the script error message if you are not bothered by it and do not want to take the above action. It does not affect QuickBooks one way or the other.

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

Welcome, @JECS. Thanks for becoming a part of the Community.

I see that you are one of the ones affected with this issue., but don't worry I'm here to get you back in track.

Now, I know things can sometimes like to take a break. But we’re here to help. Use this article to get to the QuickBooks Tool Hub. That’s where you can get any tool we have to help fix QuickBooks Desktop issues. Follow the steps in this article for these errors and issues:

  • 6123
  • H202
  • Company file issues
  • Install issues or errors
  • Networking errors
  • PDF and printing errors
  • QuickBooks crashing

Step 1: Download and install the QuickBooks Tool Hub

The QuickBooks Tool Hub helps fix common errors.

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the QuickBooks Tool Hub file. Save the file somewhere you can easily find it (like your Downloads folder or your Windows desktop).
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the install finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.

Note: If you can't find the icon, do a search in Windows for QuickBooks Tool Hub and select the program.

Step 2: Use the tools on the QuickBooks Tool Hub

The hub is a launchpad for the tools you’ll use to fix your issue. Each tab has a set of tools for addressing different types of problems:

  • Choose the Company File Issues tab if you’re having error messages opening your company file such as 6XXX errors, missing or blank lists. This will open the QuickBooks File Doctor tool. If you need additional assistance, select Help on the company file tab.
  • Then, Select the Network Issues tab if you’re having problems with your network or your computers over a network such as error H202. You must be on your server computer.
  • Click the Program Problems tab if you notice performance issues, problems opening the program, Error 6123 and program crashing/stopped working. We recommend using the Quick Fix my Program first. You can also use this tab to resolve common PDF and printing related issues.
  • Select the Installation Issues tab if you’re having trouble installing, uninstalling or reinstalling QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Pick the Password Reset tab if you need to reset your password.

Note: If the tool from the tool hub isn’t installed, it will automatically download it in the background. It can take 2-3 minutes to complete. Please be patient because if you close out of the install, the tool may not run.

If you have any more questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach back out. Have a great week.

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

Let me know if Sarah Bl suggestion does not work.  Most likely your problem is connected to Windows' 10 latest upgrade (1903 and 1909) taking out or damaging the "printer" Microsoft XPS Document Writer, which QuickBooks (Desktop versions) uses to create the missing PDF files.

I will leave it at that, and wait to hear if Sarah Bl suggestion helped.  Wonderful if it did!  I can offer other suggestions if it does not.  I have had this problem on several computers, and each fix was a little different.

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

Well, for one thing, I'm running 1607 and I don't have the ability to update to a newer release. Secondly, this scripting error just started, as I indicated, so it isn't something to do with a "new" Windows release. Thirdly, I tried removing the MS XPS printer, which of course caused QB to complain. I used the Hub tool to restore it, but the scripting error remains. It actually disappeared for a while. So, I guess I have to ask again, why is the program looking at https://cdn.optimizely.com? That website doesn't load properly. When I go to the top level directly, I get:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.
<Error>
<Code>AccessDenied</Code>
<Message>Access Denied</Message>

</HostId>
</Error>

When I go to the .js file, I get the following:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.
<Error>
<Code>AccessDenied</Code>
<Message>Access Denied</Message>

</HostId>
</Error>

See enclosed. I don't see any reason why QB would look at some apparently Canadian site (cdn).

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

Firstly, I'm running 1607, and I can't upgrade to a later version. This scripting error started just awhile ago, so it can't be a Windows update issue.

Secondly, I removed the MS XPS printer, QB complained, I downloaded the Hub, and fixed that problem. The scripting error was there before and after.

Thirdly, going to the cdn.optimizely directly to either the top level or to the .js file, reveals the following.. obviously, something is wrong.

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.
<Error>
<Code>AccessDenied</Code>
<Message>Access Denied</Message>
<RequestId>F685EAF2E4BC6F77</RequestId>

</HostId>
</Error>

I see no reason why QB should be looking at a Canadian (cdn?) website.

See enclosed.

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

Hi there, jgsailor,

Script errors are in fact errors in Internet Explorer (IE). And,  Intuit programs use IE to display many of the screens in QuickBooks.

What it is indicating is an error in your browser is occurring when it is trying to display portions of the program.

I recommend checking with your IT professionals to help get rid of the error. You can also visit this link for other steps to take: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/all/script-errors/ee9ed848-b73d-49cc-8f92-e25da50c938f.

Let me know how this goes by leaving a comment below. I'm always around to help you out.

Level 2

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

While you might be right that scripting errors are "in fact an Explorer issue," following the link instructions have zero effect. Additionally, this just started to happen, and I don't use IE as the default and haven't for years. Something has changed, and it wasn't anything that changed on IE.

Intuit won't take responsibility for their nonsense, and I notice that you didn't address the issue of either it looking at some outside site, which is causing the error, nor have you address why it happens when the ridiculous ad displays on the lower left of the QB screen. I suspect that if it didn't display, I wouldn't get the error. I'm not interested in updating, but I'm constantly bombarded with that, and there's no way to turn it off. I PAID for this program, and with the scripting error, it's become even more of chore.

Finally, telling me to "check with your IT professionals" is condescending an unwarranted. There IS NO IT professional available. I'm the administrator of this system. Your profile claims that you're here to help. This is unhelpful.

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

Hello, @jgsailor.

I understand how hard it takes when something isn't working the way it uses to. As mentioned by my colleagues above, this error usually happens when the internet settings of the default browser are misconfigured. Or, when commands can not be executed correctly due to some program issues.

The steps provided above should resolve the problem. If you're getting the same experience or the troubleshooting steps didn't work for you, it's best to tap our Technical Support Team. They'll be able to check what's causing the error and be able to investigate this securely.

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

Hi jgsailor.

I can only say this worked for me to block script error messages (I am repeating myself somewhat.  I mentioned the same solution/work-around early in this thread, so it may be removed by the board moderator):

In QuickBooks on the menu bar click HELP>Internet Connection Setup>Next>Advanced Connection Setting>Security (tab)>Restricted Sites>Sites. In the "Add this website to the zone:" paste or type url address the error message is complaining about, such as cdn.optimizely.com, as an example. Click Add>Close>OK>Done.

Logoff QuickBooks and then log back in. The script error message will no longer appear.

This can be used for all script error messages when opening QuickBooks. I have encountered several. They all seem to be connected to "User Experience Enhancement" (aka User Tracking) that are not functioning correctly. Blocking them does not affect the software....other than to block some pop-up ads Intuit may try to send.

Re: script error when opening QB Pro 2016

I appreciate you reminding me of your solution, but it doesn't work. This, however, does work, at least so far.

I added two items to my hosts file located in c:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (a file) and had to allow myself privileges of course, since it's a protected file.

The active part of the hosts file looks like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 qbinproduct.intuit.com
127.0.0.1 cdn.optimizely.com
127.0.0.1 cdn.optimizely.com/js/[removed].js

Note that there is a TAB between 12.0.0.1 and the items, not a space.

127.0.0.1<TAB> qbinproduct.intuit.com

I still get the annoying box with the spam ads in the lower left, but that gets rid of the scripting error. If I find a solution to get rid of the spam, I'll post it.
