Transferring Quickbooks Files

I have quickbooks 2013 for Mac on my old Mac. I have the new quickbooks  2020 for mac on my new mac. How do I transfer my old files to the new quickbooks? I backed up to a thumb drive and tried to open company on the new mac but it's not an option to open.

Hi, @tc44.

You'll need to restore it before you open the company file.

Here's how:

  1. Double click the .dmg file. A new window opens the "Ghost" drive.
Note: The "Ghost" drive displays the back up of your company file along with your attachments (if applicable).
  2. Drag the company file (with .qbXXXX extension) to the folder where you want to store the company file.
  3. Drag the Attached Documents Library folder (if applicable) to the same folder as the QuickBooks company file.
  4. Click the copy of the company file saved on the desired location or go to File > Open Company.

Once the company file is restored, QuickBooks will ask you to update the file. Just click the Update button.

I've attached these articles are good references for importing and restoring company data:

Thank you. There is no attached documents library, only the quickbooks dmg file. When I follow these instructions and then try to open the file it says "The folder or volume where the file is located is locked or read only. Please copy the file to your users documents folder then re-try opening it from there.

Hi there, tc44.

I'll help you make sure that you're able to move your company file in the new QuickBooks.

Let's go back to your Documents directory and follow these steps:

  1. Look for the dmg file, click File, and then select Get Info
  2. Look for "Locked" checkbox and make sure it's unchecked.
  3. Click the Get info window at the bottom and make sure your user name has permission to read and write the file.

Once done, go back to the new QuickBooks and re-open the company file.

If you're still getting the same message, please call our Technical Support Team so they can take a closer look at the error and help you further with this. Here's how:

  1. Go to this link: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact.
  2. Select QuickBooks Mac Desktop.
  3. Select the Company File option, then select a sub-topic.
  4. Click Get Phone Number.

Let me know if you need anything else.

You moved the backup file from the thumb drive to a folder on your local drive?
