Are the user permissions that are possible in Pro 2020 online the same as those available in the Desktop version?

What do you mean with "Pro 2020 Online"?

User profile in QB Desktop is more complex than QB Online.

Thank you for your quick reply.

The two products about which I am talking are here:  https://quickbooks.intuit.com/desktop/pro/.

And the question is this:  Are the user permissions that are possible in each of the products identical, or are finer more complex permissions possible with the online version.

As I have to report the answer to somebody else, if you have a link to support your answer that would be helpful.

QB Pro and QB Pro Plus are the same product. Their difference is only about the licensing policy (i,e one time vs subscription). As I mentioned earlier, QBD has more user profile features than QBO, and the feature in Enterprise edition is more complex than Pro/Premier.

No, they are not the same at least in part because the products are different.  Generally there is less granularity - fewer settings - in the Online version compared to Desktop.

Thank you both of you.

You both say that more complex/finer user permissions are available in the Pro 2020, the Desktop product.  Can you please give me a couple of examples of user permissions that you can do in the Desktop product that one can't do in the Online product.

Hello, Forgiven!

We don't have a direct comparison of the user permissions for QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) and QuickBooks Online. However, we have an article with a list of permissions for QBO: User types and user permissions in QuickBooks Online. For QBDT, you can refer to the onscreen list when adding a user.

Let me know if you have other questions about adding users or changing their permissions.

Have a good one!

The link goes to an article on products that are different from those I was enquiring about. See the file. (And my post.)

Thanks for getting back to us, Forgiven.

The links provided by JessT are linkly the correct articles for you to see the access rights of every user type in QuickBooks Online.
Meanwhile, QuickBooks Desktop doesn't have an article that shows the access rights of every user. Instead, you can see it when you add users to your company file. From there, you can compare the what the users can and can't do.

We'll be right here if you need anything else.

James, I am not trying to be difficult, but you haven't explained why the products in her article (see my attached file earlier) have quite different names to the products that are the subject of my post.

Hello, Forgiven.

I appreciate your time getting back here. The link shared by my colleague JessT is for the web version of QuickBooks. While the link you've attached from your previous reply is for the desktop. Both programs have a different interface.

You can visit our website to see the comparison here: QuickBooks Online vs Desktop.

OK, now I'm confused.

I now understand that Pro Plus 2020 and Pro 2020 are both Desktop products.  (I was misled by the fact that one has Online Access.

The article you sent describes four (4) plans.  Which of these products is equivalent to Pro 2020.

Then the comparison I want is the User Permissions under each of those two products (Pro 2020 and its online equivalent.)

Yes, I suspect that you have answered that above, but if you could, please confirm that your answer applies to the two products I have specified here (Pro 2020) and its online equivalent, and I will get out of your hair.

I appreciate you for getting in touch with us here in the Community, @Forgiven.

Let me chime in and provide clarification about using QuickBooks Desktop.

Quickbooks Pro Plus has the same features as QuickBooks Pro Desktop. The only difference between the two is that Pro Plus has an annual subscription product and includes unlimited support and automated data backup.

The user permissions you can grant to others users are the same for the two products (Pro and Pro Plus). I recommend downloading the free trial version of QuickBooks Pro 2020 for you to navigate and see how the user permissions work.

To download, please visit the Download a trial of QuickBooks Desktop article. It contains detailed information about how you can download the product for free.

I've included an article you can use to handle the downloaded file, like how you can install the program into your computer: Install QuickBooks Desktop.

Let me know in the comment section below if you have any other questions. Have a great day ahead.

That confirms my comment "I now understand that Pro Plus 2020 and Pro 2020 are both Desktop products.  (I was misled by the fact that one has Online Access."

Looking forward to getting an answer to the remainder of my post.

Thanks for following up with the Community about your questions, Forgiven.

The link provided by my colleague, RenjolynC, discusses some of our available QuickBooks Online plans. None of these subscription types are equivalent to any QuickBooks Desktop products, they're entirely different things. QBO is based in a web browser and can be accessed through desktop/mobile apps, while QBDT is an application that's installed on a computer.

Here's how you can compare user permissions between both online and desktop products:

  • For QBO - Review Intuit's User types & permissions article to get an in-depth understanding of how this feature works.
  • For QBDT - Take a look at our Users & Restrictions resource. Additionally, as AlcaeusF mentioned, you can download a trial version to use and learn how the program works.

Once you've obtained an understanding of how users work in each product, you'll be able to see the differences between both.

I've included a couple resources below which may come in handy moving forward:

@Forgiven

You may deploy a private cloud or put your license on a QB cloud hosting to access your company file(s) by internet connection.

Quote: "None of these subscription types are equivalent to any QuickBooks Desktop products, they're entirely different things." This doesn't make sense to me. There are four levels of product sophistication (Simple, Essentials, Plus, and Advanced) shown in the article. One of these must be closer than the others as an online choice instead of Pro 2020. If somebody is using (Desktop) Pro 2020 and wants to move to an online product, then it is a reasonable question to ask which online product is the closest in function, is it not?

I would say QBO Advanced is the closest thing to QBD Pro.
