We sell doors and windows by the sq. foot. I know I can set up the inventory to charge by the square foot, but can I add like 2 doors at 24 sq foot each?

We are changing to QB Enterprise.

Hi there, rchipman62.

I'm happy to know that you're interested in using QuickBooks Enterprise. I can provide some insight about setting up inventory in this version that I'm sure you'll find helpful.

Yes, you can add these doors at 24 square foot each. To do this, we'll need to activate the Unit of Measure feature first, let me walk you through the steps on how to do it:

  1. From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
  2. In the left navigation menu, select Items & Inventory.
  3. Go to the Company Preferences tab.
  4. In the Unit of Measure section, click Enable.
  5. Select Multiple U/M Per Item.
  6. Hit Finish.

Next, we'll need to create the item (door) with the correct setup to ensure QuickBooks will calculate the right amount when you enter it on an invoice. The following steps will guide you through the process.

To create the inventory item:

  1. From the Lists menu, choose Item List.
  2. Click the Item drop-down menu at the lower left corner of the page.
  3. Select New.
  4. From the Type drop-down menu, choose Inventory Part.
  5. Name this item.
  6. Enter the Cost and Sales Price of this item.
  7. From the Income Account drop-down menu, make sure to select the right account.
  8. Click OK.

To set up the unit of measure for this item:

  1. Still on the Item List page, double-click the item you just created.
  2. Click the U/M Set drop-down menu, then select Add New.
  3. In the Unit of Measure window, here's what you need to do on the corresponding pages:
    - Select a Unit of Measure Type: Choose Area (square foot, acre, square meter, etc.), then click Next.
    - Select a Base Unit of Measure: Select Square foot (sqft), then click Next.
    - Skip the Add Related Units page by clicking Next.
  4. Enter a Set Name, then hit Finish.
  5. Click the Edit button.
  6. In the Related Units section, enter the appropriate details on each field. I've attached a screenshot to show you an example.
  7. From the Sales drop-down menu, choose the name of the related unit that you entered.
  8. Click OK, then OK again.

All of this information and more is available from our guides on how to add items and how to use units of measures for items. That should do it. With these resources, I'm confident you'll be adding items in QuickBooks like a pro in no time!

Keep in touch with me here if there's anything else you need. I always got your back. Thanks for reaching out, wishing you and your business the best.

But what if you have more than 1 door at the same square footage?

Make and use Group items. You can read about this in Help. It even is seen in the sample file "Product-Based" = Rock Castle Construction.

Example:

The Group item exists with 1 door item, qty 1, 3 hinges (choice of brass or nickle or bronze, for example) and one lockset.

I order 5. You put this qty on the Group Item and everything increases times 5: 5 doors, 15 hinges, 5 locksets.
