Removing old Payroll Liabilities from platform

I have a red exclamation point on payroll liabilities icon on home page.  When I go to employee center it clears and does not show a problem, and there are no unpaid liabilities.  How do I clear this?

I'm happy to hear that your liabilities are taken care of. The last thing we need is a notice from the IRS. Determining why this alert shows up and help you clear it is my top priority.


Thanks for letting me know ahead of time that you don't have unpaid liabilities. Normally, the red exclamation point will only appear on the Home page, if you have liabilities that are unpaid, or due within 3 days.


That said, let's take a closer look at the Payroll Liabilities window and check if there's anything due:

  1. From the Employees menu, select Payroll Center.
  2. Go to the Payroll Liabilities tab.
  3. Take note of the Send By date and Status of your liabilities.

If you don't see anything due within 3 days, I would recommend refreshing the system by closing all open windows in QuickBooks. Let me walk you through the steps on how to do it:

  1. Click the Windows menu.
  2. Select Close All.

That should do it. I'm confident that with these resources, you'll be able to clear this in no time.

Thanks for trying the recommended solution above. Let me help you clear the red exclamation point on Payroll Liabilities icon of your Home page.


Normally, this alert will show if you have unpaid liabilities. To verify this, you can run the Payroll Liability Balance Report.


Here's how:

  1. Click Reports at the top.
  2. Under Employees & Payroll, select Payroll Liability Balance.
  3. Update the date range and click Refresh.

The positive amounts on this report are the unpaid liabilities.


If you have already made a payment and the red exclamation point is still showing, please check this article for the troubleshooting steps: Scheduled liabilities show as overdue or in red.


Also, here are additional steps that can help us resolve this issue:

  1. Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest software release.
  2. Download the latest payroll tax table.
  3. Re-sort the QuickBooks Desktop lists.
  4. Close and reopen QuickBooks Desktop.
  5. Run the Verify Data/Rebuild Data processes to correct any data damage.
