I am trying to restore a backup file in Quickbooks. I have Quickbooks Desktop version 2018 and I am trying to restore a backup file created with Version 2015. I am getting a Restore Failed message. Several months ago I was successful restoring a backup file from the same source, but not today. Does anyone have any suggestions?
any error message? To isolate the problem, create a dummy file on 2015 and restrore it on 2018. If you can restore the dummy file, your data file is damaged. Call and ask Intuit Data Service to fix it. Otherwise, consider purchasing a 3rd party file recovery service.
How old is the backup? Do you still have the actual QWB working file in 2015 version available to just "open" within QB2028? Can you restore it into QB2015 and not 2018? What happens then? It is possible your backup has either had its name type changed or is corrupt.
Thank you John-pero for your reply. The backup is a couple of weeks old and as far as I know its just a standard backup coming from a 2015 desktop version of Quickbooks. Nothing out of the ordinary. I actually restored a backup file from this same 2015 program several months ago and everything was successful with that restore. I talked to a QB specialist a few minutes ago and she told me that it sounded like the file might be damaged or corrupt in some way and that a better backup might be a portable file instead of a QBW file. I think I get my client to send the company file to me that way and see if that will work.

John-pero, I just wanted you to know that I did find a solution to my problem restoring my client's backed up company file. I discovered along the way that having him create a portable file was the answer to the problem. He could even email me this portable file as an attachment and I could restore it and presto, I had the company file to work with. I really appreciate your help with this. I think now we will both look into upgrading to the same version of Quickbooks so we can swap files back and forth.
