Running multiple versions of Quickbooks

I am an accounting firm. We have various versions of Quickbooks. We recently upgraded to Windows 10 on all of our workstations. The problem is this. We can open QB Premier 2017. We can open QB Premier 2018. We can open QB Premier 2019. We can open QB Premier 2017 and 2019 at the same time. We can open QB Premier 2018 and 2019 at the same time. We cannot open QB Premier 2017 with QB Premier 2018.

We get a pop-up box with QuickBooks has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

It does not matter whether 2017 is opened first or if 2018 is opened first. Which ever one is opened second is the one that errors out.

Does anyone know what's going on and if there is a solution so I can get them working together again?

Re: Running multiple versions of Quickbooks

Hi @jdbsdi,

As of the moment, you're unable to pull up and access your QuickBooks product with different versions at the same time.

One of the reasons is the error you have received when accessing your QuickBooks Premier 2017 and the 2018 versions.

As always, you can visit our Help Articles page for QuickBooks Desktop if in case you need some tips and related articles for future use.

Re: Running multiple versions of Quickbooks

We could always run Premier 2017 and Premier 2018 in same time. Is it a mere luck? :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Running multiple versions of Quickbooks

sounds like the problem  is with win10

Not being a win10 user the only thing I can think of is user permissions, check to insure that QB as well as the company files are all set to the same user permissions (system user permissions)

Re: Running multiple versions of Quickbooks

No, the problem is not with Windows 10.

I am running Windows 7 Pro and started having the same problem after I installed the last update for 2017 Premier.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled both 2017 Premier and 2018 Premier. One error message I saw stated that the two versions need to access the same file, but I cannot now find the error message.

This is a daily problem on many levels.

Re: Running multiple versions of Quickbooks

Let me help add details about running multiple versions of QuickBooks, @KristyG.

If you've open one company file for different versions (Premier 2017 and 2018), QuickBooks will update the data file so it can no longer be used if you open it in the lower version.

You can use multiple versions of QuickBooks Desktop, however, you can't open the same company file.

For more information about installing multiple versions, you may refer to this article: Install multiple QuickBooks Desktop versions on one computer.

Re: Running multiple versions of Quickbooks

hi @KristyG ,

As explained by LilyC , you are not allow to open the same file with different version (year). You may only open (not working concurrently) the same file on Pro/Premier with the same year.

Another thing, if you are still running QuickBooks on Win 7, you have to upgrade your OS or purchase a new machine prior to January 2020.

Re: Running multiple versions of Quickbooks

Good morning!

I get around the shared data file problem by installing each version of QB Premier in its own separate folder on C drive. Every once in awhile, I have restored a company file into a different version to more easily identify corrections after my client has been in it, then worked back and forth with both versions open with no problem. I am still able to do this as long as I am not using 2017 Premier for one of them and 2018 Premier for the other.

Usually when I have multiple versions open, it is not the same company file. One is my own file in 2018 and the other is a client's payroll file or full company file in 2017.  The problem with opening and running both as I normally do started in August after I installed the latest update for 2017 Premier.

Re: Running multiple versions of Quickbooks

I am not opening the same file in 2017 and 2019.  I am trying to open one company file in 2017 and another company file in 2019 and Quickbooks will no longer allow BOTH files to be open at the same time.

Re: Running multiple versions of Quickbooks

Hello there, @Annoyed10.

Let's repair both QuickBooks Desktop 2017 and 2019 version so you'll be able to open your company files at the same time. Repairing your QuickBooks fixes program-related issues or errors.

Here's how:

  1. Restart your computer to close unnecessary programs interfering with QuickBooks.
  2. Back up your QuickBooks company file.
  3. Click Start and then Control Panel. (In Windows 8/8.1: From the Start menu, open Search and type Control Panel. From the results, select Control Panel.)
  4. Select Programs and Features. If necessary, choose to Uninstall a program. (If you don't see these options, select Programs, then Program Features.)
  5. Choose QuickBooks in the list of programs and choose Uninstall/Change.
  6. Click Continue, then Next.
  7. Select Repair then Next. Wait for the Repair to complete.
  8. Choose Finish. Restart your computer if prompted.
  9. Don't forget to download the latest QuickBooks release and the latest payroll tax table when you open QuickBooks.

Once done, you can now open both company files at the same time.
