Just recently, my Quickbooks (Enterprise v.19) is super slow every morning, for a good 3-4 hours, only in the employee files. I can't even edit an employee without it taking 10-15 minutes, forget running payroll.
Everything else runs just fine. Any suggestions?
Great to see you here in the Community, @pwoodward.
Let's perform some steps to get your employee file working.
Here are the possible reasons your employee file is getting slower than what is needed:
To start with, let's make sure the software is updated to the latest release if you're using the CD version. There isn't a need to update the program if you've downloaded it from the internet. Then, you can create a backup of your company file to protect any data loss.
After that, you can run the Condense Data utility to reduce the size of your company file.
The maximum number of employee names you can enter in the software is more than 100,000. To learn more about the list limits, you can check out this article: Maximum Number of List Entries.
To check the list size, you can press Ctrl+1 on your keyboard on the Employee Center. Then, review the File Size in the File Information section of the window. Please see the screenshot below for your reference.
Here's how to remove your custom-sorted name list:
If you're still getting the same issue, I recommend following the other solutions through this helpful article: Resolve QuickBooks Desktop Performance Issues.
The steps above will help you get back in running your payroll, @pwoodward.
Stay in touch with me if you have other concerns. I'll be around to help.
I have only 320 employee names, so I am not anywhere near the list limit. I see the file size is listed as 898732 but I have no idea what that means.

While we're continuing to work on resolving this issue, you can export the list via IFF if you'd like to view your Employee List as a workaround. To do this, you can check this article for the detailed steps: Export or import Intuit Interchange Format (.IIF) files.
I appreciate your patience as we work through this. Please know that you're always welcome to post if you have any other concerns related to QuickBooks. I'll be around to help you out. Have a good one!
Anything more on this? I'm experiencing the same issues. Sometimes when I click on an employee it takes minutes to open up their info. I only have 60 employees. Literally every screen change. I can tell my computer is being taxied when in payroll and employee data.
Any update to this issue? I've been having the same issue for the last couple months. Many times when I go into the employee info area the software locks up for minutes and it's creating many delays on how long it takes to do a basic payroll function.
I know how program issues really affect your daily payroll activities, Tim.
This is still investigated by our engineers to find the root cause. Once this is all set, they'll provide a permanent fix through product updates.
For now, exporting and importing a .IIF file for employee list is our only workaround.
I'd also recommend updating the QuickBooks release version from time to time. Our engineers will include the fixes for the issues through it.
Your patience is much appreciated as we get to the bottom of this.
