My client uses QBO. She debits inventory for materials purchases and uses a monnthly journal entry to relieve inventory for materials used that month.

She now will be using tags to track her sales and GOGS by product line.  However, in the JE there is no way to tag a line so that the cost is tagged appropriately.

Is there a way to accomplish this that I am not thinking of?

You can use the Class or Location tracking feature, Laura.

The feature helps you track income, expenses, or profitability by account or any part of your business. You can assign classes or locations per line item when creating a journal entry.

To use it, you'll want to turn on the feature first. Let me show you how:

  1. From the Gear icon, click Account and settings
  2. Go to the Advanced menu, click the Categories section.
  3. Toggle Track classes and Track location. Select how you'll want to assign classes and label for your location.
  4. Click Save and then Done

You can now create a class by going to the Gear icon and click on All lists. Just click Classes and then New at the upper-right. After creating one, you can then assign them to your Journal Entry.

To help you manage your classes or locations and keep track of them by pulling up reports, you can use this article as a future reference: Get started with class tracking in QuickBooks Online.

Let me know if you have other questions. You take care and have a great day!
