Trying to change a user's password crashes QuickBooks

Logged in as Admin, Company->Setup Users and Passwords->Set up users ...

Selected the user and clicked Edit User. Changed the password and click Next, Next, Yes (access to all areas), Finish.

A dialog box appears saying "QuickBooks is unable to complete this operation and needs to restart. QuickBooks will restart automatically." (it does not restart)  Then a Windows dialog box appeared with "*** FATAL ERROR *** (M=2188, L=1145, C=315, V=0 (0x0))". The password is not changed. I then tried running QB on the file server to change the password, but had the same result.

Trying to change a user's password crashes QuickBooks

Thanks for reaching out to the Community, @me2002.

I want to ensure you’re able to get the QuickBooks Desktop password reset.

To get this resolved as quickly as possible, I recommend reaching out to the QuickBooks Desktop Support Team. Rest assured, they have the tools to assess your account in a secure environment and get on a screen share with you while performing troubleshooting steps to see what's causing this behavior. Here's how to get in touch:

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Go to Help, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Choose Contact Us.
  4. Give a brief description of your issue, then click Continue.
  5. Pick Start messaging.

You'll hear from an agent shortly. Feel free to let me know how the conversation goes.

I'll be here if you have any other questions or concerns. Take care!

Trying to change a user's password crashes QuickBooks

I have the exact same problem with the same error code.  I have reached out to support several times and they walked me through changing the password online.  This does not fix the issue with the desktop program.  I was then run into a circle of changing the password again online, and then eventually hung up on.

This isn't the kind of experience we want you to have, @pcorle. I'm here to make it up to you and make things better.

Beforehand, I'd like to appreciate you for the effort in trying the possible ways to fix the issue.

In this case, we can perform some troubleshooting processes to isolate the issue.

We can start by updating your company file to its latest release. It keeps your software up-to-date with the latest features and fixes. Then, you'll want to run the Quick Fix my Program from the QuickBooks Tools Hub to scan QuickBooks Desktop errors and quickly fix them. I'll show you how.

  1. Close your QuickBooks.
  2. Download the recent version of QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. Once the installation finishes, open the tool hub on your Windows desktop.
  6. Select Program Problems and click Quick Fix my Program.
  7. Then start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

For additional information, refer to this article: QuickBooks Desktop doesn't start or won't open.

After then, you can try resetting your password again. However, if the issue persists, you can perform the Verify and data rebuild tool. This fixes fatal errors when you use QBDT, run a well-data checkup to make sure your company file is error-free, and any other data concerns.

Here's how to verify data:

  1. Go to the File menu, and select Utilities.
  2. Choose Verify Data, then tap OK to close all windows. If you see “Your data has failed the integrity check”, you'll need to rebuild your file. If there are no problems with your data, you’re done.

If there are problems with your company file, you'll have to rebuild it. Please refer to the steps below:

  1. Go to the Files menu and select Utilities.
  2. Choose Rebuild Data, and then click OK.
  3. Tap OK to make a backup to prevent data loss along the process.
  4. Hit OK to continue the rebuild process.

For a more detailed step, please go to this article: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.

Once everything is all good and ready to reset the password for your company file, please refer to this article for reference: Reset your password for QuickBooks Desktop.

Please let me know if you have any other QuickBooks-related concerns or clarification in managing your company file in QuickBooks. I'll be around. Please keep safe!
