Unable to edit tax line mapping



On one of our quickbooks files we are unable to edit any tax line mapping for any account. I do the usual right-click an account and edit it but there is no line where there normally would be for editing the tax line mapping for that account. The option does not appear when you go to create a new account either. In the Account Listing report it shows all accounts as unassigned.


I have looked through preferences and user permissions (it doesn't work as an Admin either), but to no avail. Is there something I am missing here? I inherited this file, so is there an option buried somewhere someone turned off? 


The other files I have all function fine in this regard, it is just one company file in particular. 


This is on Quickbooks Enterprise 19.0.

Don't worry, I got your back, @RMoorsKCIW,


To check for data issues in the software, open a sample company file. This platform has all the features of the actual working program making it a great place to check for corruptions and technical issues.


You can open a test file by clicking the Open a sample file drop-down on the QuickBooks Startup page. See this illustration:


On the test file, try printing the checks and see if the same hitch occur in the test company. If not, go back to the problematic file and run the Verify and Rebuild Utility.


Here's how:


Verify Utility

  1. Click File at the top. 
  2. Select Utilities
  3. From the list, choose Verify Data.  

Rebuild Data

  1. Go to the File menu. 
  2. Click on Utilities
  3. Tap the Rebuild Data option. 


If it does, run the Repair Tool to resolve common errors in QuickBooks Desktop. Here's how:


  1. Create a back up your company file beforehand to avoid any accidental data loss.
  2. Reboot the computer and tap the Windows Start menu.
  3. Find Control Panel on the search field or select it from the list.
  4. Press Programs and Features then Uninstall a Program.

    Note: If you don't see Programs and Features, select Programs instead. Then select Program and Features.

  5. Pick QuickBooks from the list of Programs, then press Uninstall/Change.
  6. Click on Continue, or Next. then Repair.
  7. Press Next again then wait for the tool to start its diagnosis.
  8. Hit Finish when done.

If every set up is correct but still getting the same problem, reaching out to our Technical Team is the best option for you. They can run some diagnostics on the company file to identify underlying issues with the missing Tax Line Mapping option.

  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop Help from the drop-down.
  3. Hit the Contact us icon.

Thank you for your help, Jen, but unfortunately that didn't solve my problem.


The Verify Data and Rebuild Data showed no issues or problems with the file, so I will reach out to the Technical Team to try and solve this.

Just for the purposes of anyone else who got this issue, the Technical Team did fix it! Whoever set up this file before me had put "Other/None" under Income Tax Form in the company information. Changing it to the correct form fixed the issue.

You'll want to try the suggestion provided by RMoorsKCIW to modify the Income Tax Form Used.


Here's how:


  1. Go to Company > My Company.
  2. Click the pencil icon to edit the company information.
  3. In the Company Information window, select Report Information.
  4. Select the correct form from the Income Tax Form Used drop-down.
  5. Click OK.

Unable to edit tax line mapping

I fixed by company tax mapping issue!  I started a sample file to see if it would populate the tax mapping and it worked properly.  Once I went back into my company file, I followed the directions:  Company > My Company > Report information > edit pencil > "income tax form used" > and then I changed the tax status for me from 1065 to 1040 and then back to 1065 and it fixed the bug.


I basically changed my filing status to something different and back to what it needed to be and it corrected the tax mapping in my company file.  I hope others find this helpful!
