unusably slow while running reports

I am not sure if it is supposed to work like this or not. We have quickbooks enterprise 2017 on a quad core processor with 16gb of ram and 10 users. The new accountant we have keeps running reports that slow the server down so much that the other 9 users cannot use it. I am not sure what reports he is running but we never had this issue with the old accountant. Is it the type of report he is running? is he running them incorrectly? Anyone have any ideas?

Common issues with QuickBooks running slow typically occurs on larger company files. Though there are no limits on file size, but there may be an effect with the performance if your network is incapable of dealing with large files.


You have options to resolve this issue, but before we begin with the troubleshooting, let's first update your QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release and make sure you have a backup of your company file.


Here's how to create a backup of your company file:

  1. Click the File menu.
  2. Choose Backup Company
  3. Select Create Local Backup.
  4. Choose Local Backup and click Options.
  5. In the Tell us where to save your back up copies, choose your Desktop.
  6. Ensure that a Complete Verification is selected.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Choose Save it Now and click Next.
  9. In the Save Backup Copy window, choose your Desktop.
  10. Click Save.

You may consider reducing the size of your company file. To do this, you can run the Condense Data Utility. Please check out this article for the detailed instruction: The Condense Data utility

no that did not resolve my issue. did we read my question??? the database runs fine all day long. Until 1 user runs reports. This will slow down quickbooks so slow that you cant even enter orders in. we never had this issue until this user came on board. Is it the report he is running? is he not running the report correctly?? IE possibly limit results?? I am not sure I am the IT guy and not a quickbooks specialist.

Thanks for trying out the solution shared by my colleague, @BillGod.

Before performing those steps, have you tried updating the Database Server Manager on the host computer? Doing so ensures that all critical updates for the current year are installed.

Make sure to close out QuickBooks running on every computer to apply it on all workstations. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release article to get the patch.
  2. Select your QuickBooks version and install the patch.
  3. Once complete, reboot the server.
  4. After updating the server on the workstation, you’ll get this message: The company file needs to be updated to work with this version of QuickBooks Desktop.
  5. Create a backup when the message prompts and follow the on-screen instruction.

Right after, open the file and run a report. I also recommend performing again the steps shared by my colleague to fix the issue.
