upgrading desktop from 2014 to 2016 - can it be done?

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to upgrade from 2014 to 2016?  I want to go to the online version, but you have to have at least 2016 version to convert to online.  I currently have 2014.  I worked through QB and tried to get it converted and it didn't work.  I was wondering if I bought 2016 and did it myself if it would even work?  Unfortnately, I know just enough about this part of it to be dangerous and don't want to waste time or money, but also do not want to loose all of my data by going to online and not being able to convert what I have.  Anyone have any input?

Good luck finding QB 2016 still in a wrapper that you could get activated. Instead, QB provides a free trial of 2019 to use in converting your existing file. It should work. I successfully upgraded a client from 2014 to 2018 last year and to me the key in jumping 4 or 5 years is to use backup (from 2014) and restore (to 2019) rather than just opening the company file in the newer software.

The procedures are here  as well as link to the free trial. Do keep in mind that your browser has to be TLS compliant and you have to be using most up to date browser versions. In addition, if you are not on Win 7 or newer you may have issues downloading the free trial
