I was in QB and had up a transaction detail report of one of my expense accounts from last year.  I got a phone call about something else, and was trying to minimize QB so I could get to my email.  I must have hit something, I don't know what, because I got a pop up box that said "Warning.  The file you specified cannot be opened.  Make sure that it is not currently being used by another program or a read-only file.  The windows error was 'The file exists.' " I have no idea what it is talking about.  I hit the OK box, but it just blinks and stays there.  Help!

We have a solution on how to get this fixed, cindyrayno.

Here are some possible scenarios why this error occurs:

  • Trying to download a payroll update.
  • Opening a federal or state form.
  • Paying the scheduled liabilities.

To resolve, you can follow these steps:

  • Keep clicking the OK button until the update is 100% complete. Then, close and reopen your QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Click this link to update your QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release. Then, close the program and restart your computer.
  • From your computer home screen, right-click the QuickBooks icon, and then select Run as the Administrator

If you're getting the same result, you can check this article for the additional solutions: Resolve "the file you specified cannot be opened" errors.

Feel free to visit the Community if you have any other concerns. Thanks.

None of these ideas worked.  I ended up having to go to live chat and get support to take over my computer to get it fixed.  It is hard to actually make contact with a person with QB.  It would be nice to be able to "talk" to someone.
