After some thorough research and testing, I was unable to replicate the same result. Instead, I see all of the entries on separate lines with their respective details. That being said, it seems like your company file is affected by data integrity issues.
A quick and easy way to resolve this is to run the Verify/Rebuild process. With this, QuickBooks will be able to self-identify the cause of the issue and apply the necessary countermeasures to resolve the problem.

If I may ask since you are also talking this... I am trying to collapse the detail in the GL - and it's the only report I pull that doesn't have "Expand" or "Collapse" at the top. I tried going into Customize, Filters, Detail Level and choosing Summary only, but that didn't work either.
We would like to see the report with monthly and YTD subtotals.

Are you using the Pro version of QuickBooks Desktop? If so, the Expand/Collapse option is only available in the Premier and Enterprise version.
In the General Ledger report, we can't customize the report to view a column for monthly and YTD subtotals. As a workaround, you can open it month by month to compare the monthly and YTD subtotals. You may create a worksheet on the Excel tab and manually add in the columns from there.

I have Desktop Pro 2018. I've been searching for the Expand/Collapse button and assumed I had messed up my settings somehow.
@Anonymous Are you saying that there is no such button in my version? If that is the case, how can I generate reports that shows the split detail? A General Ledger without split detail is one notch above worthless. Help!

Instead of pulling up the General Ledger report, you can open the Transaction Detail by Account to check the affected accounts for the split transactions. Let me show you an example below.
To pull up a Transaction Detail by Account report, go to Reports menu. Choose Accountant & Taxes, then Transaction Detail by Account.
