QBO user cannot access gopayment insufficient privileges error

I have a quickbooks online accountants account.  For one of my clients I am trying to add a user who can BOTH access quickbooks online AND use the gopayment app to accept credit card payments.  There does not seem to be a way to add user who can do BOTH.

I added a (test account using one of my own email accounts) full user to quickbooks online, and in https://merchantcenter.intuit.com/ set role as Full User.

I logged into GoPayment using that account, had to verify the email and put in a security code, it asks me to add phone number (I didn't, just hit continue) then get the error message "Sign In Failed  You do not have sufficient privileges to access this company."

I have had similar problems in the past (I had to create two separate logins for my client's employees to access payments, one for the GoPayment app on an ipad and a different one to use https://merchantcenter.intuit.com/  which is the only way to use a card swiper on a desktop.)

Part of my work is helping less tech savvy clients manage their businesses, so my clients being forced to use two seperate logins for the SAME ACCOUNT when accessed on different devices (or for taking payments verus paying bills)  is overly cumbersome.

Is this a annoying design "feature" or a bug and if its a bug is there a workaround or an ETA when its going to be fixed?

How can one (non-accountant) user access both quickbooks online and gopayment?

QBO user cannot access gopayment insufficient privileges error

Thanks for responding with more detailed information on what you want to achieve today, @TaxCatSC

We have different user types and levels of access in QuickBooks Online for firm users. A company admin can see and do everything, except editing or removing your master admin's access.

For a non-accountant user, you'll want to edit the user types for this specific client into a Company Admin so he/she can access both QuickBooks Online and the GoPayment app.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Settings menu, then select Manage Users
  2. Find the user/client you want to edit, then select Edit in the Action column.
  3. In the window that appears, choose Company admin in the User type drop-down list.
  4. Click Save when finished.
  5. Ask the user to sign out and then sign in to see the change.

Please note that the user types you can use depend on your QuickBooks Online plan.

QBO user cannot access gopayment insufficient privileges error

I've checked for similar reported issues in our list and didn't find any, TaxCatSC.

QuickBooks helps you manage your accounts with one login credentials. To get rid of the error and for the client to successfully log in, we can perform a few troubleshooting steps.

We can delete the user access for both QuickBooks Online and Merchant Services account first. Then, let's make sure that the cookies must be enabled on the browser being used to access the Merchant Service Center. You can check out this article for more details on what to do if you have problems accessing or using the Merchant Service Center.

Then, we can send an invite again for both accounts and use the same email address that they'll be using. To give them access on your QuickBooks Online account, please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to qbo.intuit.com.
  2. Click the Gear icon at the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Manage users.
  4. Click Add user and select user type. Then, Next.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions and enter the client's email address where they can accept the invite again.

You can also check out this article for more details on our different user types and on what they can access. For QuickBooks Payments, you can check out this article: Add users to QuickBooks Payments.

I'd also suggest reaching out to our Merchant Services account so they can further check on what's causing the issue you're currently experiencing.

QBO user cannot access gopayment insufficient privileges error

The error message is when logging in to GoPayment app, I'm able to log in to quickbooks online, and https://merchantcenter.intuit.com/   (for the test account I created a few days ago to try and fix this issue).    And its a nearly idential problem that I went through unsuccessful troubleshooting with months ago (the double acount workaround from then is less viable for this additonal user).

The linked article for adding users to GoPayment is entirely about adding payment ONLY users...and the whole problem is I don't want a payment only user, I want a full users - payments and full quickbooks online access.

In GoPament app User managment the test account shows as type "other"  when I try to edit it (with accountant access)  it lists user types, but I can't change them.

1: "Take Payments only"   (this seems to be selected, there is a box around it)

2"Take payment only with access to all transactions"

3"To assign other roles to this user, go to Quickbooks on the web."  When I log in to qbo.intuit.com it shows as Standard user All access (except payroll)

QBO user cannot access gopayment insufficient privileges error

Thank you!

That was somewhat counterintuitive, but works for my most recent issue.

Does this mean that the only way for a user to have access both to goPayment and https://merchantcenter.intuit.com/  (the two different methods of taking payments, based on device used) is to be an Admin?  (If so the office staff who do most of the payments will have to continue have two separate accounts, because every employee needs access to that, but not every employee should have admin level access).

Thank so much (it would be helpful if the article about adding users to gopayment reflected the information that admin user is required for  both QuickBooks Online and the GoPayment app.

Thanks for getting back, TaxCatSC.

Yes, that would likely be the case since only the users with admin rights can process payments. Though, the Take payments only users should be able to do it. I'd recommend reporting this matter to our Customer Care Team so they can take action about it.

Meanwhile, I'd also encourage you to send feedback on the article. This would help our content manager team improve the details of the articles.

QBO user cannot access gopayment insufficient privileges error

I'll try to contact customer care during business hours sometime.  (much of my work happens evenings & weekends so doesn't match up well).

Yes, I don't understand why I need to create two separate payment only users, one for gopayment app, and a different one for https://merchantcenter.intuit.com/

QBO user cannot access gopayment insufficient privileges error

I have been having the same issues, and now I understand that it is because I would need to change those users to Admins, but I DO NOT want those people to have access to our confidential information such as payroll.

Is there a way around this?

Additionally, we are having issues getting certain devices to connect to the payment read itself. My Samsung phone connects, but we have person in our office who's IPhone will not connect, and we also have a Samsung tablet that will not connect either. The same error of "Can not find Reader."
