1099 NEC and 1099 Misc

Hey Lauri,

The newly revived 1099-NEC is not yet available in QuickBooks Desktop. I can see that the IRS has recently reactivated this form for employers and business owners to report non-employee compensations given to independent contractors.

QuickBooks Payroll services are compliant with all the IRS regulations when it comes to filing tax forms. We'll update you via email or a prompt inside QuickBooks as soon as we get an update about this form.

For more information about 1099 forms in QBDT and when to file them, you can check out this article: Learn what 1099 forms there are and how you can prepare for the 2020 tax season.

I've also included a link in which will guide you when filing your 1099 form in the IRS: Tax Year 2020 - Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC

If you need any other assistance, feel free to post here anytime. Thanks for dropping by and have a nice afternoon.

I’ll make sure you’ll be updated so can prepare and file the form on time, @Royal Cabs Mar.

As mentioned by my colleague above, we’ll send you an update via email. Otherwise, there’s a prompt message you’ll notice inside your QuickBooks account about the availability of the form. Please make sure to update your payroll tax table in QuickBooks Desktop.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Employees menu at the top.
  2. Click Get Payroll Updates.
    Capture.PNG
  3. Select the Download Entire Update checkbox.
  4. Select Download Latest Update.

Usually, the forms become available before or by the end of the year. This way, all revisions are done, and you can access them right away.

You can also visit our blog site whenever you have time. This is where we posted the latest payroll updates, including tax forms, additional features and future enhancements.

In the meantime, you can visit these links for more information about the revision and instructions of the form 1099- NEC Nonemployee Compensation and form 1099-MISC Miscellaneous Income.

Here’s a future reference that will guide you in preparing and filing your 1099 form in with QuickBooks Desktop.

We’re always here to help if you have any other concerns or questions. Just get back to this page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Have a great day.

Hi, Rob1920.

We're unable to provide a definite time on when the said form becomes available in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). Rest assured, our product development team is actively working on this so we can add this form the soonest time possible.

You can sign up for our Newsletter to stay up-to-date on any improvements in the desktop version. Just enter your Email and hit Sign up. This way, all updates will be delivered straight to your inbox.

However, as soon as an update is received, I, or another member of the Community Team, will be happy to update this thread and let everyone know so that you can download the 1099-NEC form.

Additionally, you go through this article: How to modify your chart of accounts for your 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC filing. This will provide you more details about the 1099-NEC filing as well as the steps on how to move the payments to the new account.

Is there an update in the works so that users will be able to map existing accounts to the appropriate 1099 NEC and 1099 MISC forms and boxes?

The instructions provided by QB this week to set up new accounts and enter journal entries is not helpful unless the new accounts can be mapped to the appropriate boxes on the appropriate forms.  And if that mapping becomes available, why can't we just map existing accounts to the appropriate boxes on the appropriate forms?

Let me provide you information about mapping accounts to 1099 NEC/MISC forms and boxes, shislop.

The IRS has revised the 1099-MISC form and rearranged the box number for reporting. That's the reason why they separated non-employee compensation to a new form called the 1099-NEC for the tax year 2020.

For now, there's no update yet with mapping existing accounts to the appropriate boxes on the appropriate forms. However, rest assured that we'll take note of this and ensure that this will be added as more updates will come along the way.

For the time being, you can go through this article provided by @Rose-A: How To Modify Your Chart Of Accounts For Your 1099-MISC And 1099-NEC Filing.

You'll want to read this article to check if you need to file a 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC form:What Is A 1099 and Do I Need To File One?

I can share some updates about the Form 1099-NEC, Dave.

Yes, we'll definitely roll out an update to include this tax form in the QuickBooks 2020 1099 Wizard. Right now, our Product Development Team is in the process of making sure that QuickBooks follows all the IRS regulations when it comes to filing of tax forms. Rest assured, the Form 1099-NEC will be available at the end of this month.

With the latest updates, users can now modify their Chart of Accounts for the filing of Form 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC. You can read this article to be guided in creating a new account to track the separate payments.

Additionally, please take note that the tax form will only be available in these QuickBooks versions:

  • QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 21, 20, 19, 18
  • QuickBooks Desktop Pro and Premier 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018

Using Enterprise 19. when I select 1099, either Summary or Detail, either NEC or Misc, I get -0- records. I can see nothing in editing a GL account that assigns to NEC/MISC.
Any help?

1099 NEC and 1099 Misc

It's my pleasure to assist you today, chuckm1107.

I can help get accurate information when running the 1099 Summary or Detail in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

As an initial step, let's make sure the dates used on the reports are correct. Otherwise, we'll need to download the QuickBooks Tool Hub to fix it. This tool is designed to automatically diagnose and fix common issues within the software.

Below are the instructions on how to do it:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the most recent version (1.4.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Save the file somewhere you can easily find it.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the install finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.
  6. Once the  QuickBooks Tool Hub is open, select Program Problems.
  7. Select Quick Fix my Program.
  8. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

If this doesn't work, we can try using the Rebuild Data tool in QuickBooks Desktop. This tool is used to fix any possible data damage within your company file. Let me show you the steps on how to perform this below:

  1. From the File menu.
  2. Click on Utilities.
  3. Select Rebuild Data/ Verify Data.

Keep me posted for additional questions or other concerns. I'd be more than happy to help. Wishing you the best of luck.

I use QB Desktop.  I have designated vendors as "1099" recipients but when trying to print them for 1099 NEC (no MISC vendors), it comes up "0" vendors to print.  How do I correct this so that my 1099 vendors will print for the 1099 NEC form.  Is this something else I need to do as far as their "Tax Settings".  The only option shown in my QB version is "Vendor Eligible for 1099".  If this is checked for each recipient to receive a 1099 NEC, then why are they not showing up when I try to print the 1099 NEC?

Hey there, @Rob1920.

Thanks for following the thread. I'm happy to help you out with your vendors not showing when trying to print 1099's.

I'm glad to see that you have the Vendor Eligible for 1099 box checked. However, let's cover all the steps to make sure everything is set up correctly. This way, we can narrow down the issue.

First, let's make sure your payments to the contractor meet the threshold. Meaning, Only those contractors you paid above the annual $600 cash threshold get a 1099. You can see which contractors didn’t meet the threshold.

  1. Go to Reports, then select Vendors & Payables.
  2. Hit 1099 Summary.
  3. In the 1099 Options dropdown menu, tap Ignore thresholds.
  4. If you see the Vendor, they have not met the threshold.
  5. If this is a 1099 Vendor using 1099 Accounts, you need to enter more transactions or change the thresholds.

Next, you'll need to make sure you're paying contractors from the right expense account. QuickBooks uses the expense accounts you mapped to report 1099 transactions when creating 1099s.

  1. Go to Reports, then choose Vendors & Payables.
  2. Select 1099 Summary.
  3. In the 1099 options dropdown menu, click on All allowed accounts.
  4. If you find the missing vendor, find the Account, and make it a 1099 Account.
    • Double-click the amount in the Total column for your Vendor.
    • In the 1099 Detail report, make a note of the Accounts in the Account column.

Once you've reviewed your report, you can go to your preferences to show these transactions on 1099 reports and forms

  • Go to the Edit menu, then Preferences.
  • In the Preferences window, select Tax:1099 from the left pane, then tap on the Company Preferences tab.
  • Hit the link click here next to If you want to map your accounts to boxes on Form 1099-MISC.
  • QuickBooks 1099 wizard page will come up. You will be directed to Map Accounts. This window displays all accounts used for payments to 1099 vendors. From the Apply payments to this 1099 box drop-down, choose one of the 1099-MISC boxes.

After you've completed the steps above, close the 1099 Detail report. Then, pick the second 1099 options drop-down and hit Only 1099 accounts

Check out Fix missing contractors or wrong amounts on 1099s for more details.

Additionally, I'm including a couple of other handy articles that cover further troubleshooting steps on 1099s below.

I'll be right here should you have any questions or concerns. Please don't hesitate to reach back out. You can come to the Community or me at any time. Take care!
