I saw that not all customers currently have the automatic late fee option turned on. Why would some customers have the option and others do not? Is it based on a certain QBs Online build that is updated on a particular server? We as paying customers need the latest and greatest features. Is it possible to provide your customers with a date as to when this feature will be available?
This is an important feature to utilize.
Hello there, @ProberbGem.
Thank you for posting here in the Community. Allow me to share some information about the Automatic Late Fees feature in QuickBooks.
Automatic late fees were created to help you save time. Some small businesses apply late fees or finance charges on overdue invoices to encourage their customers to pay on time. QuickBooks Online can automatically calculate late fees and add them to overdue invoices as a line below Product / Service.
As of now, not all customers will have the option to turn on automatic late fees. We'll be expanding the feature to more customers in the coming months. Stay in touch! To set up late fees, you must be logged in as the master administrator or company administrator.
For additional information about automatic late fees, please check this article: Automatic Late Fees FAQs.
Feel free to drop a comment if you have any other concern about automatic late fees. Have a great day ahead!
Possible that you don't have access to turn on the automatic late fees feature, reason why you don't have the option to turn it on.
As mentioned, not all customers/users will have the option to turn on automatic late fees. We're expanding this feature for more customers, QuickBooks updates this feature by batch. Stay tuned, for the next update.
You may get in touch with our QuickBooks Support for the recent updates.
Please check this article for additional reference: Automatic Late Fees or Finance Charges.
Keep me posted if you have any other questions. Wishing you the best!
Thanks for joining this thread. Allow me to share additional information concerning late fees in QuickBooks Online.
As discussed by my peer Angelyn_T, if your customer doesn't have this option you can still charge them by adding the fees as another line item on your invoice or you can create a separate invoice for the late fees.
Here's how to create an invoice for an additional charge:

Please continue to reach out to me if I can be of help while you're working in QuickBooks Online. You have a wonderful day!
Thanks for your feedback. However, I do not want to create extra work for myself by creating another invoice for an additional charge. Also, you mentioned in your comment "if your customer does not have this option"..... what do you mean if the customer does not have the option? QuickBooks should not release a feature to some QuickBooks users and not all. There should be allocated dates and times of when new releases will be available to QuickBooks Online Users.
Please keep in mind that we pay a hefty subscription cost to utilize this software and we do not have the features to perform our daily/weekly/monthly duties.
QuickBooks must do better to accommodate their subscribers
.. if your customer doesn't have this option you can still charge them by adding the fees as another line item on your invoice or you can create a separate invoice for the late fees.
How do I find out if my customer has this option?
Hello @Malcolm Ziman,
Thanks for joining this thread and helping us out. I can provide further information about the newly added feature- Late fees in QuickBooks Online.
If you can see and enable this functionality from the Account and Settings page, then this is available for your company file. Also, to know if you can add this option to your customers' settings, you'll want to double-check their profile if the Late Fees tab is added (see screenshot below).
For more information, refer to the article below:
Our product engineers are actively working on making sure all QuickBooks Online users can use it. Rest assured, you'll see it up and live in your QBO account as soon as possible.
While waiting, I'd recommend sending feedback and suggestions on how you'd want the Automatic Late Fees feature works for you. To send one, go to the Gear icon then select Send Feedback Online.
Stay tune for now! But, if you have clarifications, or other questions, feel free to let me know. I'll be around!
Has there been any further movement on this? I need to turn this on for our company. I am the MASTER ADMIN on the acct but this does not seem to be working STILL, almost 4 months later.
Hey there, @amberlweaver.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Allow me to step into this conversation and provide some clarification about turning on the Automatic Late Fees in QuickBooks Online.
Currently, turning on the Automatic Late Fees has not been implemented to all users. We are still expanding the feature to more customers in the coming months. We know that there are customers that are outgrowing QBO today, and our goal is to make sure that those customers are in a fully featured product that meets their needs.
Once we have the updates about its full implementation, you can check it on our QuickBooks Online Blog.
Here's a helpful article that you can check out about setting up automatic late fees for your future reference: Setting up and applying automatic late fees.
Please stay in touch for more details. Don't hesitate to reach back out to me if there's anything else you need. Wishing you all the best.
These responses from Quickbooks are not acceptable. Telling us users who obviously need this feature NOW, that you are rolling it out to other users who are outgrowing QBO but you don't want to lose their business. The people in this thread have already outgrown QBO if you are refusing to give us the options you have been telling us are coming for over a year now.
Here is another great idea quickbooks, maybe not put the feature in the help section of those who do not get the new feature. Why do I need to know how to do a feature you do not offer to me? It wasted my time.
Another novel idea is not to close your phone line at 6PM. You see, since your customers are all small business, because big business has their own departments and software, small business has customers to deal with 5am-6pm and we tend to work into the evening hours. so OPEN YOUR PHONES FOR THE PEOPLE THAT PAY YOU.
At this time, the feature to set up automatic late fees has not been rolled out yet to all users. I'd suggest checking out our blog posts for more product updates.
As an alternative, you can manually enter late fees on your invoices. You can either create a separate invoice for the charge or include it as another line item on your invoice.
Here's how to use the first option:

Please know that we are listening to all your comments to help improve your experience. For your business hours concern, @Frustrated With Q_B_O, we have a chat support team that operates from 5 am - 9 pm PST. By doing so, they can assist you with all your QBO concerns after 6 pm. Here's how:
I'd also recommend posting your product-related concerns here in the Community. You can click the Post a question button from the screenshot above since we are available 24/7 to help fix your concerns.
The information above will help you get back on track.
You can count me in if you need further assistance. Have a great day.
Hello there, @ashahrest.
The Automatic Late Fee calculation feature is currently under Beta Testing. As of now, we don’t have a specific time-frame as to when this will be released to all customers.
To see whether this feature is available in your account, kindly follow these steps:
If you don’t have the Late Fee option just like the screenshot above, you can create a service item for the Late Fee and manually add it on the Invoice or Sales Receipt.
To create a service item:

I cant imagine this issue is much harder than copying over code that already exists in one part of the website or app - does anyone know a timeline for when this feature will be available?
Thanks for looping in, Csutherl.
Allow me to provide additional updates and information about the Automatic Late Fees feature in QuickBooks Online.
As stated by my peers above, the Automatic Late Fees tab in QuickBooks Online has not been launched at this time. Our Product Developers are currently testing this option before they fully release it. This is to avoid minimal issues and to ensure that customers can enjoy this feature.
Additionally, I'd encourage to visit QuickBooks Blog to be updated with our latest news and updates including product improvements. You can check out this link: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/blog/.
I'm including this article for your future reference: Setting up and applying automatic late fees.
However, as soon as an update is received, I will be happy to update this thread to let everyone know so you can sort things out.
As always, you can reach out to our QuickBooks Online Support if ever you need help in the future that need to discuss sensitive information.
Please extend your patience while we launch the product updates to all QuickBooks Online users. If you have additional questions about automatic late fees, please let me know.
Are there any updates on the roll-out of this incredibly important feature? Creating/tracking late fees for clients with hundreds of invoices/month is not a viable solution.
Currently, there isn't an exact timeline as to when the roll-out will be available for all users.
In the meantime, you'll want to add the late fee's as another line item in your invoice. Let me walk you through how.
Once done, add the late fee item in your invoice.
