Cannot export reports to Excel in any format but CSV - other options unavailable

We have Quickbooks 2016 running on windows 10. We originally had office 365 (2019, 64 bit) on the PC when the accountant told us of the issue:

When the user tries to export a report, QB opens the export window with all options greyed out except for CSV. When the user tries to export an excel sheet via the email export option, QB says that Excel cannot be found.

I have spent probably 9 hours working on this, and have tried the following solutions, none of which have worked:

Change UAC to do not prompt.

Set the default printer.

Update windows. Update Office

Uninstalled office "apps" that come with windows

Update QB. Reset updates and update QB.

Repair install office 2019. Repair install QB.

Fully reinstall office 2019. Fully reinstall QB.

Attempt to export report from sample company - same issue

Install Office 2013 SP1. Update office 2013 SP1. (this gave a new error - not enough memory to open excel but the same results afterwards).

Install Office 2016. Update Office 2016.

(after each of these installs i ran a repair install on QB)

We have made 0 progress with any of these and I'm at the end of my rope. I see DOZENS of these issues on various message boards and none of the resolutions (if there was one) have solved their issue.

Thanks for your time

Re: Cannot export reports to Excel in any format but CSV - other options unavailable

One of the things I found in my searches was many people with this issue and no one posting how they resolved it. In the event that this comes up in future Google searches:

Quickbooks Support was unwilling to help; they said it sounded like a Microsoft issue and to contact microsoft support. Excel works in every other way except exporting from QB. I then tried the following: (Please note that i deleted many registry folders, please proceed with caution)

1. Uninstalled Microsoft Office

2. Uninstalled Quickbooks

3. Deleted all Microsoft Office folders and Intuit folders from program files (x86)

4. Deleted all Microsoft Office and Intuit registry folders from HKLM/software and HKLM/sotware/WOW6432Node

5. Rebooted

6. Installed office 2013 32 bit

7. Rebooted, Ran windows updates to update all office apps, rebooted.

8. Installed QB 2016. Updated QB.

9. Ran QB as admin, opened company file, ran report, tested export, working. Set QB to always run as admin. Closed, re-opened, tested again, working.

So I'm not certain if it was a registry setting that was re-written during the install or a plugin in the program files folder, but after literally 39 hours of support chats and calls and trial and error, this issue is resolved. for now. I'm afraid to reboot :)

Re: Cannot export reports to Excel in any format but CSV - other options unavailable

A warm welcome to the Community, nicksquires.

I'm here to lend a hand and get this working for you so you can export your reports into Excel via QuickBooks Desktop.

I appreciate your effort in performing some troubleshooting steps beforehand. To better isolate the issue, as an initial step, updating your QuickBooks release version is a good start when it comes to fixing program-related issues.

Here's how:

  1. From the QuickBooks Help menu, select Update QuickBooks.
  2. On the Update QuickBooks window, go to the Update Now tab. You can ignore the table because you don't need to change anything.
  3. (Optional) Put a check-mark in the Reset Update box to erase all previous update downloads. Note: This may increase the amount of time needed for the update.
  4. Select Get Updates.
  5. Restart QuickBooks. When prompted, accept the option to install the new release.

Once done, you might want to check if your Office 365 license is registered. This way, you'll be able to export the report without issues. If you're still getting the same result, I'd suggest getting in touch with our QuickBooks Desktop Support to have this investigated.

  1. Within your QuickBooks Desktop, click Help at the top menu bar.
  2. Click Contact us.
  3. In order to route you to the correct support expert, we need to know what type of question you have. Give a brief description of your issue and click Continue.
  4. We’ll provide you a few options. You choose which one is best for you.

The following articles are good references:

Please let me know how it goes or if you ran into a different situation by leaving a reply below. I'd like to make sure your reports are exported. Have a good one.

Re: Cannot export reports to Excel in any format but CSV - other options unavailable

Hello, thank you for the welcome.

As mentioned in my first post, I have already tried updating quickbooks (with the reset update button checked) and done all the troubleshooting listed in your reply and the troubleshooting link. I have contacted quickbooks support 2 times and they were unable to resolve this issue.

Since Quickbooks support is unable to solve the issue where Quickbooks 2016 won't export to 3 different versions of Microsoft Office (all which are licensed) I was hoping that someone has had a similar experience and had some new suggestions that may point me in the right direction.

Re: Cannot export reports to Excel in any format but CSV - other options unavailable

hi @nicksquires ,

There are 2 options you may try:

1. Reinstall Office with 32-bit, and

2. Run Registry Repair of Glary Utilities. It's a free product

Hope one of them is helps

Re: Cannot export reports to Excel in any format but CSV - other options unavailable

Hi Fiat Lux -

Thank you for the suggestions. Since my first post, I have installed Office 2010 (32 bit) with the same result. I also ran a registry repair.

In 32 bit versions of office that I have installed (2010 and 2013) there is no difference in behaviour except that before only giving the option to export in CSV it also says that I may not have enough memory to run excel, which is absolutely not the issue.
