Conflicts within QB Chart of Accounts

I imported an account from Quicken to QuickBooks.  Everything transferred fine.  My QuickBooks Chart of Accounts and Reports all look correct after the import.  However, when I go to classify the "account" category for NEW transactions it says "Account Not Found" (even though there are already transactions within that account) and if I try to add the account it says "Warning-the name is already in use".  I'm stuck.  Any suggestions?

Let's make sure that you're able to categorize transactions using the imported accounts, cre8ev.

The Account not found error might be possibly caused by data damage when categorizing transactions. I'll share the steps with you that can resolve some of the most common data issues in QuickBooks Desktop.

Start by making sure that your QuickBooks is on the latest maintenance release. Here's an article as a guide: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the Latest Release.

Then, follow these steps to rebuild your data:

  1. Go to the File menu, scroll-down to Utilities, and then select Rebuild Data.
  2. Click OK and follow the onscreen steps to save a backup.
  3. Let the tool repair your file. It may take some time. QuickBooks may seem stuck, but as long as you can move your mouse, the tool is working.
  4. When the tool finishes, select OK.
  5. Go back to the File menu. scroll-down again to Utilities, and then select Verify Data.
  6. Let the tool check your file for data issues.

If QuickBooks doesn't find any problems, select OK. It means you don't have any data damage. If there's an issue with your company file, select Rebuild Now.

Once done, try to categorize the transactions again to check if the error is no longer there.

You can also use the QuickBooks File Doctor to fix your company file if the error persists.

JenoP, I tried everything you suggested but it did not change anything.  The problem seems to be with my subaccounts - not my primary account listings.  A little further clarification: Even though my account and subaccount transactions imported over correctly from Quicken, I can not access/designate/change any subaccounts within this company on QuickBooks.  Similarly, I can create new subaccounts but I can not access those new subaccounts either. If I try to assign a subaccount (which is already included in my Account Listings Report) it says "Account Not Found" and if I try to re-create the subaccount I get a message "Warning-the name is already in use".  Subaccounts simply not working at all.

Thanks for getting back to us and for giving us more details about the situation, cre8ev.

You will get the message "Warning-the name is already in use" if the name that you're typing in is already assigned to an item, account, or profile in your company file. In your case, you mentioned that the names are already used in the sub-accounts that were imported from Quicken.

We also need to take a closer look at this to determine what's causing the issue. Please contact our chat and phone support teams for us to do that. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Click Contact Us.
  3. Enter a brief description of your concern.
  4. Click Let's talk and then choose a way to connect.

More details about their contact details are discussed here: Contact QuickBooks Desktop Support
