Credit account to bank account

I'll help share some details about changing a credit card account to a bank account type in QuickBooks Online (QBO) and guide you on how you can appropriately do it to keep your chart of accounts organized, @dturlich59.

Currently, the option to change the account type on one of your accounts in your chart of accounts is unavailable in QBO. You'll have to create a new bank account and transfer the funds from your credit card account.

Let me show you the step by step process:

To create a bank account:

  1. Go to the Gear icon at the top on your QBO account.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts under Your Company.
  3. Click New.
  4. Choose bank account as the account type.
  5. Fill in the necessary fields.
  6. Click Save.

Then, to transfer the funds you can make a Journal entry. But before doing so, I suggest consulting your accountant. This way, you'll be able to keep your books accurate. If you don't have one, we can help you find someone to help you. You may use our Find an Accountant tool to locate accountants based in the US.

Once done, you can make your credit card inactive so it gets removed from the Chart of accounts and other places where you can choose accounts.

  1. Go to the Gear icon at the top on your QBO account.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts under Your Company.
  3. Find the account you want to delete.
  4. Select the drop-down in the Action column, then choose Make Inactive.

For future reference, I'm adding this great article that can guide you in reconciling your accounts in QBO: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online. This link provides detailed information on how to make your books accurate when reconciling.
