Custom report that allows for multiple accounts as column headers

I have a report that is currently being manually generated in excel with data coming from invoices that have been imported into Quickbooks Desktop Pro. The report has the following headers in our manual version:

Date | Invoice # | Parts $ | Labor $ | Sales Tax $ | Total $

I was hoping to automate this report through a Custom Report in Quickbooks to streamline this process. I have the following matching fields in our master file:

Date | Num | Item: Acct: 4000 | Item: Acct: 4001 | Item: Acct: 4002 | Total

I'm just not sure what type of report to base this custom report off of - any suggestions would be most appreciated

Custom report that allows for multiple accounts as column headers

I appreciate you for providing the matching fields in your master file, @coolrite. I've got the suggestions you need to automate a custom report in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Pro.

Let's customize the Transaction Detail by Account report so you can streamline this process. Making the three multiple accounts as column headers are currently unavailable, but you'll get the six display fields. I'll guide you how.

  1. Go to Reports from the top menu.
  2. Select Accountant & Taxes and click Transaction Detail by Account
  3. Choose Customize Report
  4. Set the Report Date Range in the Display tab.
  5. In the Columns drop-down list, check the DateNum, and Amount options.
  6. Click OK
  7. Go to the Filters tab.
  8. In the Filter drop-down menu, select Multiple accounts
  9. Check Acct 4000, Acct 4001, and Acct 4002 in the Search Account window.
  10. Click OK twice.

The screenshots below show you the last seven steps.

Once done, the report will display the six matching fields in your master file. You can also use the Total amounts under each account. Here's what it looks like:

After that, I recommend memorizing the report to save the current customization settings. You can easily access it from the Report Center, Memorized Report List, or Reports menu.

You can also run and customize other reports, such as Profit & Loss, to keep track of your income and expense accounts. For more details, visit this article: Customizing Reports
