How do I make my catagories appear?

I downloaded my bank transactions to QB self employed.  Everything looks good accept that my catagories will now show up in the catagory column unless I click the Business, Personal or Split button.  I would have to click it thousands of times to get each and every catagory to show up for each transaction.  Is there another way to make my catagories show up?

Re: How do I make my catagories appear?

Hi there, @jeff45.

Allowing you to select the right category is one of QBSE’s main goals. This is the reason why clicking Business, Personal, or Split is the only way to make them show up under the Category column.

If you’re using the mobile app, simply swipe left for Business and right for Personal. Simply tap the transaction to select Split if it’s a mix of both types.

Check this out for more information: Categorizing & editing transactions in the mobile app.

A quick way to manage this is by applying rules to repeated expenses. For example, add one that automatically marks any new transactions that say Rent as Business.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to Transactions from the left navigation menu.
  2. Click the Add transactions drop-down and choose Manage Rules.
  3. Tap the green Create rule button.
  4. In the Description box, enter Rent.
  5. Set the Account for transactions with this description or leave it as is.
  6. Select the Type and specific Category.
  7. You can mark the box next to Also apply to past transactions if want the rule to work on already existing transactions.
  8. Hit Save.

See Use rules to speed up reviewing and categorizing transactions for reference.

I’m also adding this article that tackles more about the different category types as your guide: Categories in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Should you have additional questions, let me know. I’m here willing to help. Have a good one!
