How Do I Transfer Balances to The New Year?

Hello,

Please excuse me if this is a silly question BUT: if we need to close the books for 2021 and we have customers with outstanding balances how can we transfer those to 2022? Open a new invoice and move the balances over? Everything I have looked up says "oh send your customers an invoice" but we have and they have not yet paid. Some invoices were sent at the end of 2021 so I'm not quite sure what to do. Thank you for any assistance you can provide!

Thanks for the details, Bookkeeper1333.

I know a way on how you can move the balances.

You can create a statement and send it you customers. You can create a statement and send it your customers. It is a summary of your customer's account listing recent invoices, credit memos, and payments received.

I've also added this refence for more guides in closing books: Year-end guide for QuickBooks Desktop.

I'll be around if there's anything that I can help with. Keep safe!

How Do I Transfer Balances to The New Year?

When you say "outstanding balances", do you mean unpaid invoices or do you mean uncollectible accounts?  If it's just unpaid invoices that are collectible, there's nothing you need to do and nothing you should do.  If you reissue invoices and your business uses the accrual method of accounting, you will be shifting income and that's bad.  And, if you're on the cash method of accounting, it makes no difference whether you reissue the invoices or not as income is recognized when the customer pays, not when the invoice is issued.

If these accounts are deemed uncollectible, you can expense them to 'bad debt expense'.
