how to customize dates in reports

I'm using the QB Mac Desktop version. When I run reports, such as Sales or P&L, it won't let me enter custom dates. I'm stuck with just using the options available in the drop-down menu.

Even when I select "Custom Dates" from the drop-down menu, it won't let me change them in the date field, it just immediately reverts back to whatever the dates were before changing to "Custom Dates".

Same thing if I click on the little tools icon in the menu bar and try to set the custom dates there.

How do I set the dates to what I want?

Thanks in advance,

Re: how to customize dates in reports

Hi there, Fern.

I appreciate you for sharing your experience with us. I'm here to help customize your reports in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

I've replicated this on my end and wasn't able to get the same result. Let's check if it's a data issue by running the Verify Data Utility tool. This helps resolve unexpected behavior like this.

Below are the steps on how to do it:

  1. Click File.
  2. Click Utilities.
  3. Click Verify Data.
  4. When prompted with error, click Rebuild Now.

Or you can follow these steps to rebuild your data:

  1. Click File.
  2. Click Utilities.
  3. Click Rebuild Data.

Once done, try checking your the bank account number again and see how it works.

For more detailed instructions, I’d recommend checking this article: Resolve data damage on your company file.

Now try using the Custom Dates again and select your preferred date from the Date field.

I'll also leave you with the following manual guides to be more familiar with QuickBooks Desktop for Mac: QuickBooks Desktop for Mac Guidelines.

That's it. I'm still here whenever you need help with customizing reports in QuickBooks Desktop. Have a good one.

Re: how to customize dates in reports

Hi Charies, thanks for the reply.

I did a Verify Data but it said there was no problem with the data. Error is still happening.

What else should I try?

I'm running MacOS Mojave 10.14.5 and QB Mac Desktop V18.0.5 R6

I'm not completely sure this is a new problem as I only switched to this version recently. I can't remember if I I've tried to run a custom report or not on this version.

Try clicking with the mouse in the date fields, rather than using the tab key to advance.

Re: how to customize dates in reports

I appreciate your getting back to us, @Fern.

When customizing the date of the reports, you can manually type in the date range that you want or click on the date selector. I can share you a screenshot of how it looks like on your end.a.jpg

If you're still unable to select a specific date range, let's ensure that your QuickBooks software is updated to its latest release version.

Here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. On the taskbar at the top, go to QuickBooks.
  3. Select Check for QuickBooks Updates.
  4. If you don’t have the latest release, follow on-screen prompts to install.

Also, I have here some articles to help you isolate if you encounter errors while working with QuickBooks:

Re: how to customize dates in reports

Thank you for the suggestions but it still doesn't work. Not only that, but I've discovered I can't change the date on existing invoices, either. I want to change the date on an invoice that I did up in advance but it won't accept any other date than the one when I created the invoice. I can't change it in the date field on the invoice, plus the "Edit Invoice (Command E)" option under the Edit Menu is grayed out. This can't be right. Before I subject myself to calling tech support (complicated options menu and long wait time), can anyone confirm this is an error? Is it possible I have some setting or preferences set up wrong to cause this to happen? Thanks.

Re: how to customize dates in reports

Hello Fern,

There's a great chance that you've set up a closing date on your QuickBooks file. That's why you're unable to edit the dates. Let's verify this on your settings and see if you can edit the dates.

  1. Click QuickBooks menu.
  2. Click Preferences.
  3. Click Users & Password, and check the closing date at the bottom.

Logging in as QuickBooks Admin sometimes helps.

You might also want to visit the qblittlesquare website for future reference. Just click the "Download the QuickBooks Desktop for MAC 2019 User's Guide" link.

Re: how to customize dates in reports

Another possibility is you have a System Date format that is incompatible with QuickBooks. QuickBooks requires the System Short Date to be six digits. Sometimes the System Date cache gets corrupted. Choose Apple Menu->System Preferences. Click on the Language & Region icon. Click on the Advanced Button. Click on the Dates Tab. Check that the Short date entry is 4/1/76 or similar.
