How to enter a % on an invoice line item

Under List go to Item, you should see a percentage box.  Keep in mind this will take the percentage of the line item above only not the subtotal.

How to enter a % on an invoice line item

Thank you, but I thought it might work if I entered the subtotal first, then entered the percentage, but no such luck. I'm trying to book retainage, which QuickBooks desktop version handled with no problem, but it appears the online version isn't quite as robust.

How to enter a % on an invoice line item

Hello there, Kimberlie1.

Allow me to chime in. I'm here to address your concern with entering a percentage on an invoice line item.

QuickBooks Online (QBO) offers progress invoicing where you can split up an estimate into multiple invoices based on stages or the percentage of work complete. This feature automatically tracks the progress for you.

Here's how you can enable Progress Invoicing:

  1. Click on the Gear icon.
  2. Select Account and Settings.
  3. Choose Sales.
  4. In the Progress Invoicing section, select the pencil icon.
  5. Click on the Create multiple partial invoices from a single estimate checkbox.
  6. Choose Save and click on Done.

You can check out this article that will walk you through the detailed steps: Progress invoicing.

As for your other concern about recording the retainer, here's a reference for more in-depth information: Record a retainer or deposit.

This should point you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have further questions. I'm always here to help.

That's a pretty good feature available in QB desktop. Unfortunately, you can't in QBO. Sorry, no workaround to offer at this time.

How to enter a % on an invoice line item

Hi Jane,

If you were able to create a progress invoice from an estimate, my hat's off to you. While I used to be able to get it done, recent updates have made it seemingly impossible.
