I added a checking account to our chart of accounts and entered an opening balance. I linked our checking account to Quickbooks and the bank balance shows $0. Why?

It's a delight to have you here in the Community, @lynnkulow.

Let's perform some troubleshooting steps to know what's causing this odd behavior so we can get you back to working order.

To start with, let's check if it's a data issue by logging in to your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account via a private browser. This is because there are times that the browser stores frequently-accessed data, thus causing QBO to act weirdly. It's also a great way to isolate the issue since it doesn't store data in the cache.

Please use these shortcut keys to access a private browser:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Internet Explorer: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Safari: Command + Option + N

Then, let's manually update your downloaded bank transactions in the Banking tab, and see if this changes your checking account's opening bank balance. Below are the steps on how to achieve this:

  1. Go to the Banking menu.
  2. Click Update

If this works, it means that you need to clear your browser's cache so the system can start fresh. This way, the stored cache will be deleted on the browser so it'll function efficiently.

I also wanted to ensure you're able to manage your online banking in QuickBooks. Thus here's an article that you can refer in case your bank transactions won't download or you encounter a bank error. Here is an article for the detailed reference: Steps to do when you can't download bank transactions.

Please let me know if I can be of any help when it comes to managing your chart of accounts and online banking in QuickBooks. I've got your back. Take care and have a good one, @lynnkulow.
