A warm welcome to the Community, stacey36.

I'm here to help you permanently save a tax-exempt client in QuickBooks Online.

If you're using the old Sales Tax Center interface, you need to make sure that the option for This customer is taxable box is not selected on the customer's profile.

Here's how:

  1. Click Sales on the left menu and go to the Customers tab.
  2. Choose a customer profile and click Edit.
  3. In the Customer information window, go to the Tax info tab.
  4. Make sure to remove the checkmark in the This customer is taxable box.
  5. Enter the Exemption details.
  6. Click Save.

If you're using  Automated Sales Tax, you can follow the steps below to complete the process.

  1. In the Customer information window, go to the Tax info tab.
  2. Mark the This customer is tax-exempt box.
  3. Enter the Reason for exemption and the Exemption details.
  4. Click Save.

However, if it keeps on reverting to taxable let's perform basic troubleshooting steps by opening a private browser.

Here's how to open a private window in different browsers:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N.
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P.
  • Internet Explorer: press Ctrl + Shift + P.
  • Safari: press Command + Shift + N.

If it works fine using the private window, open your account using the original browser and clear the browser's cache.

Let me know how the result of this troubleshooting in the comment below. I need to make sure this is resolved and you're back to running your normal business processing. Have a good one!
