I receive payments from my roommate for rent and I pay ours together. How do I split this up, or indicate that my rent expenses are less than the combined total ? It’s messing up my accounting.

Let's categorize your transaction correctly, marcsfutures-gma.

When you categorize, QuickBooks puts your transactions on the correct line of your Schedule C. This also organizes your income and expenses so you know what areas of your self-employed business have the biggest impact.

Here's how to categorize a transaction:

  1. Go to the Transactions menu.
  2. Enter the detailed information.
  3. Select Business if the transaction was for business, or select Personal for personal. If the transaction was both, select Split.
  4. Review the category in the Category column. QuickBooks tries to categorize transactions for you.
  5. Tap Save

Tried that already. Split doesn’t work properly. Time to find a different app.

I tried that already. The split isn’t working properly. It wont let me save the split.

This is not the impression we want you to experience when trying to split transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed, @marcsfutures-gma.

I know how significant it is for you to categorize and split your expenses in QBSE. That being said, let me guide you in performing some troubleshooting steps to resolve this.

There are times that the browser is full of frequently accessed page resources, which causes some errors and/or unusual responses. To fix this, let's access your account in a private browser. You can use either of these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl Shift P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: Command Shift N

If it works successfully, you'd want to clear your regular browser's cache to prevent any unexpected behavior. Also, you can use other compatible browsers in QBSE.

Also, may I ask if you receive an error message when trying to save the split? Adding some info would be much appreciated.

However, if the issue persists, I suggest getting in touch with our support team. They have the tools to further investigate this to know the root cause of the issue and provide a fix.

Once everything is okay, I'll be adding this link as your reference to guide you on how to split a single transaction between business and personal, or into multiple categories.
