I've gotten $4k+ in cashback in 2020 by using cashback apps (Ibotta) and uploading grocery store receipts, is this going to be seen as taxable income? What should I do?

Let me share some information about handling cashback in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE), alexandria-brady.

The cashback rewards you get from your cashback apps (Ibotta) and uploading grocery store receipts is usually not part of the business income. In this case, you'll want to categorize the transaction as Personal in QBSE. I'd also suggest seeking expert advice from an accounting tax professional for additional information. They'll be able to share further details as to when you can consider some rewards as part of the business income.

Her's how you can categorize the cashback transactions:

  1. Go to the Transactions menu.
  2. Find a transaction on the list.
  3. Select Business if the transaction was for business, or select Personal for personal. If the transaction was both, select Split.
  4. Review the category in the Category column. Then, QuickBooks tries to categorize transactions for you.
  5. Choose the category link if you need to change the category. Select a general type, and choose a more detailed category.
  6. Press Save

For more details about this one, see Categorize transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed article. Check out also the categories in QuickBooks Self-Employed article for additional reference about categories.
