Inventory asset is zero

I started a new QuickBooks company file as of January 1, 2020 since our business changed owners. Included in the sale was the current inventory as of the end of the previous year. I adjusted the quantity on hand of the inventory items to match the amounts remaining in the previous QuickBooks but for some reason when I run a report of the Balance Sheet the Inventory Asset account is completely missing. When I go to the chart of accounts it just shows all zeros. I see that our Income & COGS accounts are working correctly to show the sale of products and inventory is being reduced by the invoices. If I run the Inventory Valuation Summary report I do see a Retail Value but no Asset Value for some reason.

This is my first time setting up a new QuickBooks file with inventory so I'm a little lost. I entered the cost and sales price for our inventory items but its still not showing up in the Asset account.

Inventory asset is zero

Hey there, Squibley.

You might want to double-check the adjustments you made. There are fundamentals that we need to review initially. First, evaluate whether the Inventory items in QuickBooks are set up properly such as inventory and non-inventory item type. The non-inventory type does not keep a perpetual count or an average cost.

Second, evaluate whether the total inventory value on the inventory valuation summary report agrees to the inventory amount reported on the Balance Sheet. Disagreement in these two numbers can be caused by several factors and lastly, review the Inventory Valuation Summary for negative quantities and inaccurate average costs.
