Is a cash receipt required?

If a customer pays me cash in person for a service I have performed, do I need to enter a cash receipt?

In the past I would just take the cash, deposit it into my checking account, then wait for the downloaded item and record it into my services income category.

Not sure if I should be creating a sales receipt though?

it works the way you were doing it

but doing it that way bypasses reporting, especially by item per customer, of course if you only do one service and never anything else, that would be ok
